So What Are you Reading?: Generations

A bit over a third of the way through Cairns' The Case of Rose Bird. Two criticisms: (1) the opening chapters could have definitely been more concise, given the late former California Chief Justice's reluctance to discuss her personal life (and indeed, much of the excess verbiage consisted of whining about that fact) and (2) like far too many political writers, she frequently uses moderate terms like "liberal" and "conservative" (with or without intensifiers) to describe extreme points of view that would more properly be called (respectively) "leftist" and "reactionary." This all-too-common misuse of language serves the interests of extremists on both sides, at the expense of everybody else, and I've long held it to be a significant contributing factor to the present hyperpolarization in America.

I finished reading STVOY: Atonement yesterday afternoon, and I'll post my thoughts over the review thread.

Off-topic(?)
Is DS9: Warped really as, well, "warped" and bizarre as people say it is? I often hear it described as the strangest Trek novel ever, which sounds like something I'd totally be into.

I'm not sure it's a "strange Trek novel" in the sense you're hoping for. What makes it strange is that it doesn't really read like a Trek novel. It's more of a Philip K. Dick pastiche that doesn't feel like it fits in the Trek universe. K.W. Jeter is the kind of author who may be perfectly good at his own original work but doesn't have the knack for adapting his style or concepts to an existing universe. Neither his Star Trek nor his Alien Nation tie-in novels feel like they have a good understanding of the series they're based on.

I started STTNG: The Light Fantastic last night. I'm a big fan of Data, and Moriarty was one of my favorite TNG bad guys, so I'm really looking forward to reading this one.

Just finished VAN: What Judgements Come and VAN: Storming Heaven. The storytelling is top notch. The Reyes / Pennington scenes really bookend the entire story's conclusion. The action at the end Storming Heaven had me hooked and longing for just a little bit more before it wrapped up, but I appreciated the majority of the characters getting a proper conclusion one way or another.

I still have In Tempest's Wake left, but the Vanguard series has really been a brilliantly written, multi-faceted, whirlwind of a saga to me. There are rich characterizations and details woven into the story that allow for some comparisons to all of the other generations of Trek shows. I like the Enterprise cameos and felt that they were handled properly, only adding to the Vanguard story without taking it over.

After I get through the epilogue I will still be in a lot of the 5YM trek literature as I go through my maiden, somewhat chronological version of it all. I'm floating around between 2267-2269 in the timeline. I want to focus on more of the recent publications before I go back through the older Pocket companions, so I think next for me will be the Legacies trilogy. I'm open to any recommendations or suggestions.

Oh yeah, I totally get what you mean now. I remember his other DS9 novel, Bloodletter, being a little... off?

Enterprise cameos? I don't remember seeing any Enterprise characters in Vanguard.

I noticed the other day while looking around on Goodreads that I've been reading almost nothing but Trek for the last year, so instead of going back to TOS: How Much for Just the Planet, I started Small Favors, the 10th book in The Dresden Files series.

My bad....I meant the TOS Enterprise, not Archer and his crew.

Euugggh... well, it wasn't that bad, but if you're reading Before Dishonor directly after it...

Well, one should read Q&A between those two. Most of the new crew members who appear in BD are introduced in Q&A. Too many people assume it's somehow not a necessary part of the sequence just because it isn't Borg-related, but it is.

I need to make a purchase or two to catch up, at least they way I want to read the stories. Want to back up and read the NF comic Turnaround at some point soon, and then Treason. Excited that I am finally reading much of the post Nemesis stuff. However, I understand your reaction to Resistance. The pacing of the story is down right goofy, in that the Borg vessel Picard detects is within hours of the Enterprise's location. I'm not done it yet, but one day Picard is trying to convince Worf to be his permanent first officer and the next he volunteers to be re-assimilated. The arrival of a new Borg Queen discussion, comparing it to a bee-hive was cool. Not as good as I had hoped, but I flying through it.
