Future of Paramount includes Star Trek tentpole

just in the realm of speculation, depending on how The Mummy reboot goes, ditto for Discovery, anyone thought about the possibility of Alex Kurzman coming back as writer/director for trek 4? Somehow, it would make sense to me.
For one, they'd try to bring back some of the 'light' of the first movie that maybe was lost with Beyond having a completely new creative team. Kurtzman should be enough trustable, and unlike Orci, he already has experience as a director. I could also see JJ collaborating well, as a producter, with someone he has already worked with from the start and literally created this version of the characters.

Kurtzman and Jung (one of the writers of Beyond) had always been a bit sidelined by all the attention that Orci and JJ, and lastly Pegg, got... and yet, if there is one thing I appreciate about these guys is precisely the fact they aren't as loud as their colleagues. They just do their job (and of course they hope the majority likes it). The fact they don't engage with fans too much isn't a flaw for me, it's a quality and hint of professionality and confidence. Maybe I'm just old-fashioned about this aspect but, for me, there needs to be a distance between writers and fans online, and regardless I like or not a writer and their choices, I respect someone who talks about his work without ever trying to 'justify' themselves to the fans that do not 'approve' them. Orci would, at times, interact with fans (especially reboot haters) too much, at the point I feel like he might have been influenced a bit.

I would expect Kurtzman to come back. I don't think Orci would. He and Kurtzman had quite the falling out and Paramount more or less kicked Orci to the curb over Beyond.

Orci was an interesting, Trekkie influence on the reboots but is quite an odd duck personally and far too willing to bully fans. Who, admittedly, were also far too willing to bully Orci.

His pitch for the third movie sounds needlessly convoluted and rear-facing when Into Darkness was such a great send-off for the new crew. They'd faced their greatest enemy, grown together, and set off on their adventure.

In case you wondered:

so long as The Mummy is a reasonable hit its a distinct possibility that Kurtzman will then helm Trek(1)4 (going from Cruise to Trek like JJA)...maybe Cruise (or Crowe) could this time be persuaded to be in Trek in a support role (Capt Garth?) to give it a serious box office boost overseas (remember the Cruise as Pike/Crowe as Nero rumours for ST09)

Several sites online list this information including wikipedia: On May 14, 2017, Paramount announced that the fourth film is untitled and slated for release on June 21, 2019.

Can anyone confirm this? It appears to be erroneous.

If such an announcement was made, I managed to miss seeing any mention of it whatsoever.

My question is, WHEN WILL WE KNOW? Are they going to come out soon and say the script has been greenlit? Will June 21, 2019 come and go in complete radio silence from Paramount? I suppose then we should just assume the Kelvinverse is done?

June 21 is only one week before a new Transformers movie starts. I don't see Paramount release two blockbuster movies within that short time.

Keep in mind that Discovery's getting all the attention at the moment. I doubt Paramount want any Trek news lost in the shuffle.

I guess it's false.

Has he ever confirmed if that was genuinely the plot, or if he was just messing with people? Because every other time he's been asked about the plot he says it belongs to Paramount and it's not up to him. My guess being that with Payne and McKay announced as the writers it's possible some story elements of the old script could make their way into the movie.

Jesus, how many of these do you actually need?

One every three years or so is fine.

Not quite like that. It was a disappointing year for franchise movies overall--which is what BEY was not a flop or anything--and that's because of how crowded the field was. Beyond didn't stand up because it was slotted poorly and because it wasn't marketed well. The movies that did well had generational appeal that they don't seem to target with Star Trek.

Like, all those other movies have toys and t-shirts and stuff and they gave up on marketing Trek to families before Into Darkness even came out. So idk.
Honestly, STB wasn't an outright Bomb; but sorry (and I liked it and would love to see NuTrek 4) it was definitely a flop in that it didn't even manage to make twice it's production budget in Worldwide receipts; and Blu-Ray sales weren't spectacular either. It actually IS one of Paramount's better performing 'franchise' films from both last and this year - but it's more because whomever is green lighting projects for Paramount is doing a shit job of predicting what will do well with audiences (Crap like 'Monster Trucks' and 'Baywatch'...seriously?)

In the end, I think any Star Trek feature film plans will be on hold until ST: Discovery runs it's course. BOTH Paramount and CBS are concerned about Star Trek franchise over-saturation; and I'm sure STB's overall Box office performance (which probably could have been a bit better if Paramount had a competent Marketing dept.) isn't helping alleviate such fears.

Time will tell.

Star Wars: Episode IX is scheduled to be released on May 24, 2019. Paramount feeling very confident then!

Most fans of Star Wars will have seen Episode 9 three or four times by the time June 21st rolls around. That's not the problem. The problem is the release of Transformers around the time a new Trek film is released.
