Star Trek: Chance Encounter

These guys are amateur film makers in the UK, they have done several shorts before - this being their first foray into Trek.

I agree that it was a little slow in places, but then so was original Trek. Plus you don't need to be hit in the head with Trek for it to be Trek.

I gave an honest review. Why do people feel so hesitant to give constructive feedback instead of praising just for the sake of it?

It had good parts. It had bad parts. *shrug*

I really enjoyed this! Can totally see how the filmmakers realized using 'Star Trek' to tell a nice, simple human story.

Great to see another fan film set during the TNG era too. Certainly inspired me to want to do another short. Bravo!

This is a lovely fan film (and apart from using library music, is a fine example of what can be done within the guidelines).

My only nit-pick would be the security officers uniforms not matching.....then I remembered that they would reuse season 1-2 uniforms all the time in TNG and that the cut and color didn't match there either........so really it could be an homage to that!

I don't think that's an unreasonable comment.

I thought the acting and sound work were fine, and visually it looked good. I'd have liked a bit more meat in the story but I enjoyed it a fair bit.

Perhaps no-one was feeling hesitant? Perhaps they were expressing themselves according to the way they experienced it? As did you? I do not believe that all people think alike in any of these matters.

For myself I have many criteria that guides my own experience of any entertainment. Most often is the way it makes me think... or feel. To lots of people the criteria I use is not appealing. We think differently. Some people prefer the technical, or a film matching up to their own preferences/standards in any number of other ways. Which sometimes appeals to me too. But not necessarily.

My honest review would be from my own personal POV anyway, as is everyone's. But I am rarely-to-never interested in 'reviewing' film, art, literature, etc. as in "a formal assessment or examination of something with the possibility or intention of instituting change if necessary." Critical feedback.

Not my cup of tea as it were. Or maybe I just come at it from a different angle... basically I share my personal responses to a film rather than my observations a film's correctness/successes or failures in lining up to what 'I' think it should have or could have been. Which I often find are two completely separate things to me anyway.

What I mean is it is not uncommon for me to fail to enjoy a wonderfully crafted film with wonderfully acted characters because it doesn't suit me in some way. It is also not uncommon for me to greatly enjoy a wonderfully crafted film with wonderfully acted characters because it 'does' suit me in some way. And vice versa with even the poorest crafted & acted. Many I may fail to enjoy, many I may enjoy greatly. My response to any film one way or the other for any reason that suits me is all I can really speak to as a passive viewer. And realizing it is a rarity that two people experience any film with exactly the same responses I also find I very much enjoy listening to other people's experiences too... even if or when their own experiences are completely opposite to my own.

So what I will write here will express my own honest experience while watching this film:
I enjoyed it.
I admired and enjoyed the story line. It was unexpected.
I enjoyed the simplicity of the film combined with its more complicated backstory subtext not being fully spelled out for me.
I enjoyed the way the actors presented their characters.
I enjoyed the editing.
I admired and enjoyed the practical sets
I enjoyed the outdoor scenes
I admired and enjoyed the cgi parts
I admired the work I recognized was put into making the actual film; the production of it. I know much of the challenges in film making so I often watch with an eye to the behind the camera goings on too.

I also found myself envying all those who were involved in the actual making of it. I've been in that position with larger films and have loved every hard working sometimes bone tiring sometimes frustrating moment of it.

It was really a good choice of location. If TNG would have revisited the Shore Leave planet, this might have been one of the storylines. Excellent job.

Haha! That was great, especially the effort he went into matching that VHS look. What I love is that I remember doing a similar thing with the same scene when I was younger...(which was probably about 10 years ago lol).

Thanks, but just to be clear this is not my film, I am just sharing it here :bolian:
Is this film by the people who created "Chance Encounter"? That's how I listed it. And that's who posted it on You Tube. Frankly, I found it there before I saw this thread.

Yes it is by the same people who created "Chance Encounter". You replied directly to my post saying that "I've added this film to your dedicated page and given you a Headline at Star Trek Reviewed.". This made me wonder if you were under the mistaken impression that I was somehow involved in the film.
Frankly, I found it there before I saw this thread.
OK, good for you.

Good news. The makers of Chance Encounter are in pre-production on a new fan film called 'The Holy Core'.
It will be set in the TNG era onboard what looks like a Nebula Class Starship. I am looking forward to seeing this as they have already proven that they can produce a good fan film.

The ships registry is NCC-60285. Is this a ship we have seen before in Star Trek or a new ship? It is close to the Honshu's registry, NCC-60205, which was the nebular class ship that was destroyed whist taking Dukat to trial.

I hope people don't mind me using this old thread, but as there is little information so far on this film and it only has a working working title, I did not want to create a new thread just for this post.
