I gave the trailer an "a". Why? It did what it was supposed to do; made me very interested in seeing the show which is what it's supposed to do.

I rarely give A+s unless something just blows me away.

I'm not into being critical of the trailer as I realize that it's bits and pieces and that things may not be as they seem once you see the actual product.

But I'm looking forward to the premiere.

Something clicked on me earlier in regards to the trailer - a lot of comments I've seen have said "Oh, it's action!" but.... I don't see action. I see a lot of talking. As said above, it's bits and pieces and not quite representative.... but not one phaser was fired, not one torpedo spread, not one explosion.... it actually seemed more tense with the only real hint of violence being the swing/hinted space-confrontation.

Maybe it's wishful thinking - but I can't see this being an action show with that amount of dialogue or character scene picked over bangy shooty shoots.

This is very true. There's little action depicted at all, in the fighty bitey smashy sense. In fact, what we have are conflicts and discussions on the bridge about how to solve a problem - just like TOS used to do, and a spacesuit trip to explore the unknown, the thing everyone says they want Trek to do. Actually, you can hear something pretty much like the classic TOS photon torpedo sound effect as there's an explosion flash through the bridge view plate. That's immediately after a graphic that says "PHOTON TORPEDO TARGET LOCKED," which is just after the argument about firing first. Start at 1:47/2:24 on the American CBS trailer.

Indeed! Personally I think it's all perception -same as the many "JJ style" comments. It's not JJ style - it's 2017 style. I don't see much different in theme, just looks.

BAH! I'd forgotten about that. Ok, since I sit corrected, maybe disregard the torpedo bit But rewatching on my other monitor, it's intriguingly not very focused on or actiony. That torpedo shot could be absolutely anything - the torpedo lock in itself is the same - tension over direct action.

Going back to before we saw anything, we had a comment about Balance of Terror or Undiscoverd Country as a touchstone - two things that weren't built on action, but tension. That's what I see here and I find it utterly fascinating.

True, but the FX shots come last. So we don't know the final ratio of dialogue to pew-pew.

The argument about firing first comes off as utterly tense. I hope that scene lives up to my expectations.

I can see them holding back some key moments/scenes - but I imagine they'd prioritise effects that they wanted to show off in trailers, so they'd get completed first. If they didn't finish any action they might be trying to keep it under wraps - or they just didn't want to focus on it.

It's an odd one as there are multiple variables on that front..

I sincerely hope so. not just becaus eI've liked his Trek work - but.... thats just bloody good television, especially for binge watching!

We know for a fact they're holding things back as we have yet to see the final reveal of the tweaked Discovery, just a blurry and fuzzy version of it in the poster.

Plus, principal shooting isn't nearly over yet, is it? I think they are taking what they have and rushing a trailer out to quell rumors the show is turning into a train-wreck.

It's long done on the pilot, they are about five episodes in.
They're producing a trailer because this was their showcase for the fall shows, I doubt rumours of the sky falling have even made their way to CBS, as they're pretty much just fans reading way too much into things.

Which is wise. It's not as if Discovery, if it makes it to season 7, will suddenly start looking like Where No Man has Gone Before ot TOS. It'll evolve along it's own visual path and likely not even consider the narrative side of things.


RE: The trailer and it's "action." I was actually quite pleased we weren't hit over the head with starship porn and shooty-mc-shoot. There will be action, for sure... But there's been an idea, particularly with the Klingons of this era, to do a Cuban Missile Crisis type of story... Methinks that's what this is gonna be like. A huge political nightmare with rising tensions, some gunboat diplomacy and a whole lot of white knuckling.

And I think we all know that Klingon's respect a show of strength, which is likely what #1 is driving at in the trailer.

If it makes it several seasons and is hugely popular, I can see Captain Burnham handing off the USS Enterprise to James T. Kirk, as they remake TOS. But, because someone behind the scenes said it, it will still be the "Prime" timeline.

IMO, she does carry that sprity look T'Pol had in ENT.

If there is a link to Sarek in all likely hood it'll be that he either helped raise her or during her time in Starfleet he became a type of mentor for her. I don't think they are related in any way.

I'm of the same thought - seems more of a Pike/Kirk relationship (Kelvin timeline, of course) than anything deeper. But thats froma few seconds of footage so clearly just guesswork.

I'm inclined to agree. Perhaps even recommending her to Starfleet Academy.
