Thoughts on Discovery Starfleet Uniforms (Trailer Edition)

It was never going to be realistic to expect the Studio to agree to using costumes that were totally compatible with The Cage or WNMHGB.

Sorry, don't buy the rationalization. The modernized TOS uniforms in the Kelvin movies proved that modern audiences could accept the old uniforms with a few tweaks. Discovery just didn't have the good taste or the balls to follow suit.

Discount the unaired pilot episode and suddenly that uniform timeline looks amazing, reimagining or not.

If you replace the Pike era shirt with the Pike era away team jacket, it also makes a kinda sense:

I wonder what the USS Shenzhou crew have under the blue jackets? Colored department shirts?

Also, I'm not sure how certain we can be on the 2255 date either, like folks have said.

I really dig the nuTrek TOS uniforms too, but DSC isn't a show for people who'd prefer that or the TOS style, and nor should it be, because that would be needlessly self-limiting.

I'd be up for that, even if it's the new Gold, Silver, Bronze or more likely Yellow/khaki, White, Brown/Tan.

Actually, another thing I was thinking is can we assume that the above are Department colours rather than say CO, Officers, Enlisted? (After all, Nick Meyer is still onboard IFAIK and his films were the biggest showcases for Starfleet having both classes of personnel.

I don't know when exactly Discovery will be taking place, but these Kelvin Timeline uniforms are just gorgeous. I would've loved the new show to use them. Then again, if it's set before Pike, then the ones they did pick make more sense.

I assume that a wish to establish a different visual style (and possible rights issues between CBS & Paramount) are some the reasons why DSC isn't using them. I mean, Word of God specifically stated that DSC is not Kelvin Timeline but there's at least one active thread on this board still arguing that it must be even with the differences in the visual style and production statements. How much worse would it have been if they just apped the Kelvin films wholesale?

I don't know, to be honest. It's probably better that they're doing their own thing, come to think about it, but I do like the Kelvin uniforms a lot.

Longer I look at them less I like them. The amount of metallic material is completely excessive. The shoulder bits are kinda OK, but the sides are just way too much. Besides, that sort of 'sides are different colour than the chest' design works way better, when it is the chest which is the lighter colour and the sides are darker.

I think, you are on to something here. :)

Maybe we'll find out the "chainmail" sections have some high tech purpose?
Perhaps the entire shirt is chain-mail, with cloth sections covering the front and back?

Give how often Starfleet officers get beat up, stabbed and shot, this might be a very practical idea.

Starfleet officers wearing armor? I mean, security personnel, sure, but not the leads. That stuff is uncomfortable ;)

Or the need, or the inclination. The show is not a reboot of The Cage, so why should they feel beholden to the aesthetic choices of a discarded pilot? It has nothing to do with balls or good taste.

Indeed. 90% of this board has a mental image of how they'd do the Starfleet uniform. I know exactly what I'd do if presented with the challenge - it wouldn't look like this, but it would certainly not look anything close to a 1964 failed pilot either :)

Sometimes these stylistic debates take on the trappings of political battles with questionable spin tactics. It's not necessary to bash The Cage to reinforce that you dislike the uniforms or feel they're outdated. It's not just a failed pilot. it's canon as it was cut into The Menagerie which won a Hugo award. William Ware Theiss' work was legendary and should not be casually shrugged off just because it's 50 years old nor should the new designs be embraced simply because they are new.
