What would be a deal breaker for you in Discovery?

Inspite of that statement on your part, it's the characters that I and others primarily "tune in" to watch, the plot is a plus on top of that.

There is in fact exploration of the characters, their lives, back histories, families, going on on the show and in the movies. If anything there should be more so (imho).
Good characters and good stories are dependent on each other. Whats interesting about a character is how they react to the situation that they face. Example: in "Best of Both Worlds" we learn that Riker is capable of making the big decisions when he is forced to fire on the borg ship even with his Captain on board.

I agree with this, especially when we watch reruns of Trek. Once you seen a episode and know the plot and know all the twists the main joy in watching the show again is simply getting to see the characters do their thing and interact with each other and also watch the actors performance.

I agree that those are important elements in Trek's rewatch factor and I don't think every scene has to advance the plot (example: Data criticizing Picard's painting in the teaser for "A Matter of Perspective").

This kind of reminds me of what Ron Moore once said in a dvd commentary for one of the "Battlestar Galatica" about how he would sometimes put character stuff into a episode over things that were there to move the plot along. It could even be small things like someone brushing their teeth or maybe that scene were after they find the original earth is destroyed you see Adama walking the corridor and everyone in the halls and you can see discipline on the ship has broken down and he still bothers to pick up a piece of trash on the ground.
I want "Discovery" to be filled with these small little , everyday moments that make a tv universe feel more like the real world. Every scene doesn't have to be something to move the plot or be two characters talking about their emotions. It's the little details that can really make a show feel special.

You realize you guys are manufacturing drama out of absolutely nothing, right? Nothing has happened. No one has threatened you with warnings or banning. No one was even having an intense disagreement. This is all happening because apparently you guys can't handle the idea of moderators having political opinions. Move on.

When I was a moderator, we had to walk ten miles in the snow to express our political opinions. I was once beaten with a Romulan disrupter by Da Boss.

As to manufacturing drama out of nothing, it seems to be the way of life in America these days, I'm sad to say. The internet is a thing of beauty and a successful tool to lower IQs at the same time.

A Klingon with any self-respect would head-butt the offending crewman and call it settled.

Or stab them. Eat them whole. Something.
I say all of the above.

P.S. I like the full size version of the avatar even better! The uniform looks great! :techman:
M, fantastic job!
Thanks guys! :)

I'm not whom you asked, but I'd say the Star Trek Continues episode "Lolani" would be an example of how Discovery should *not* handle a moral or ethical message - there's an extended portion of the namesake's dialog where they really should have just given her a little pulpit and let her beat people with it. ;)
I'm not sure I can agree. I felt it was their best episode, because it was actually about something. I don't think more subtlety would have helped the story.

Marie Le Pen, the leader of a party started by former French Nazis, almost won a French election.
Nah, Marine Le Pen didn't “almost win”. Her opponent Macron secured double the votes she received, which might be an exceptional result for her right-wing party, but comes nowhere near what anyone would call a win.

The political world is facing an extreme right wing backlash and its time to lash them back
I tend to see it the same way. It's really frustrating to see how right-wing thinking has edged its way back into the political landscape.

What strikes me as odd in these kind of discussions on this board, is how persecuted and entitled conservative people always seem to feel; thinking they are in their moral right to spread radical right-wing ideas.

I might be oversimplifying things, but where I come from (Germany), people are more or less categorized as either “links”, “rechts” or “mitte”, politically speaking. And in puplic forums, being “rechts” is unequivocally seen as being in the wrong (while “mitte” seems to be comparable to what I would call “konservativ”; i.e. wanting the status quo, striving for everything to stay the same). On German internet forums it's not allowed to propagate a right-wing mindset; it will get you banned. I'm sure it has a lot to do with our history, but whatever the reason, being right-wing means your thinking is outdated and obsolete. Our concept of “free speech” ends the moment you're calling for violence or endorsing hating other people because of their ethnicity, religion, sexuality or gender. It's laid down in our criminal code as “Volksverhetzung” and punishable by law.

I'm not necessarily saying things are better in Germany, but at least in public forums right-wing people can't expect to be in their right to spout hateful nonsense. Hate shouldn't be an opinion free to express. I can't overstate how weird it is for me to see these people here, whining because they think their way of thinking is an acceptable “opinion”. :brickwall:

So, not sorry, but rant is over. :)

Stay off twitter and most social media. The internet can bring out the worst in people, from every ideological perspective. People tend to say things online that they would never say to another person's face. What's needed is more tolerance and charity. That's my two cents.

At one point they had to shut down Yahoo comments temporarily because the hate/mean comments were so extreme. And I heard it was poorly moderated to begin with, so it was filled with them.

I'm in favor of answering them back, so they can know they won't be tolerated. They seem to have a hard time understanding human decency and they won't stop on their own. So if they get banned, charged with something, arrested, who cares---a lot of them deserve it to be honest.

I agree in essence, and I don't think I'd have suggested more subtlety, so much as that the long-winded speech she gave in her recording could have been made more efficient at conveying the message. And it also occurred to me that perhaps the vocabulary and other aspects of the way she conveyed the message could have been kept just as heartfelt while brought down a few grade levels, too - both for the benefit of a wider audience, and also for realism in the notion that *she was a slave*.

The female captain episode, on the other hand, was just absurd - BUT, I do understand what others have been saying about the difficulty of trying to make an episode seem like it would have fit in the late 60's but also work 100% for a modern audience. I'd choose the latter over the former if it was me, but it's their show and I get that they're going for as much authenticity as they can manage.

One thing that never changes here is people threatening to leave.

If I see one more post about people threatening to leave, I'm going to leave. Huh? How about that? You think for one second this board can survive without my witty and considerable intellect? Not for a second I would imagine. So don't anyone threaten to leave again, or I will leave.
I'm leaving....or something
Exploding consoles. These are the stupidest thing ever. It would never fucking happen.
