What would be a deal breaker for you in Discovery?

This is the first time in a long time that we are seeing this part of the timeline. I want to see competent world-building. I want them to develop this "new look" at the universe we know. If that doesn't happen (like with Enterprise before season 4), I think I'll get bored fast.

While not a deal-breaker, if any of the characters are really snarky or "look how clever I am," it will annoy me. I don't like snarky characters unless they're written like Tony Stark. Otherwise they're annoying.

So basically, your dealbreaker is if it's Star Trek... ;)

LOL

No, I want new Star Trek, just not clichéd Star Trek. Use the Star Trek universe as a backdrop to tell good stories. All TV shows have weaknesses, and Star Trek (all of them) are not immune. Not asking for perfection, but I'm 66 now and have been watching Star Trek all my life, and can't sit through any more of what I call Star Trekkyness. Good scifi set in a Star Trek universe is what I'm hoping for.

How about not blaming anyone and just having different reactions?

As for deal breakers it would come down to characters. If I'm not engaged with the characters, then it could be completely true to what I think a pre-TOS and I would check out. All the starship beauty and design in the world could not get me back.

Being boring and/or insulting to my intelligence would be deal-breakers for me.

Trek is kid friendly. So yes no nudity or too much sexplease. The shower scene between Tpol and Trip almost got me grounded when i was watching and mom walked in (i was 16).
I see that all the time on this board: Why does the new show have to be as tame as the old ones? Just because people watched the other shows when they were kids doesn't mean all future installments always have to be as kid-friendly. A new and different take on Star Trek can and should be allowed to be new and different.

Also, what shower scene? :cardie:

It doesn't have to be *tame*, but for me and mine, Trek is a family thing. Concepts that beg to be discussed, basic nudity, and PG-13 action-adventure levels of violence are fine. We're not prudes, by any means. But if it reaches the level of softcore porn or gratuitous violence, it's out. Beyond being inappropriate for the younger viewers, it's also just insulting because it *almost* always means that they are filling in for a lack of a real story to tell. (IF there *was* a compelling story to tell that required them - and on occasion, there is - then that might be okay. But I'd need to know that upfront - and that would require that someone else has seen it to tell me it's worthwhile. For Trek, preferable that they just avoid that. There are plenty of good stories to tell without it.)

I think we put this to rest awhile ago. Those original Klingon designs were, in fact, real, but there was a new production designer and they are no longer using those designs. This has been confirmed to me by people working on the show.

RAMA

I'm different from most in that I'm a production design and cinematography snob. What I've seen of the look of Discovery so far, the ship itself and the gothic Klingons, is leaving me cold.

Also, Les Moonves' statement that the show would appeal to younger audiences makes me feel that it will be (across the board) tacky and show-offy with nonsensical detail for its own sake (which was a facet of the Kelvinverse) and that would really turn me off.

I think there is a way to update the Cage era look while holding onto a sense of the uncluttered minimalism. I shudder to say this, but that's at least what the intent of Axanar was (whether they were going to achieve it or not).

In addition to that I've heard all these rumors about a totally stupid story thread with the whole Mark Lenard multi-universe thing and if they really are going in that direction then it's an epic fail in the writing.

If Discovery's arc is really a story that deserves to be told I would have expected CBS to drop more hints as to what those themes are by now. So there's a very good chance the spine of this story is weak and that it played a factor in these delays and Fuller's exit.

What Klingon designs exactly are we talking about? The Klingons make-up and uniforms we saw in the trailer will obviously be used, won't they?

Yes, I love those Klingons. I'm talking about the extent of the gothic and insect-like designs of interiors and ships.

If DSC becomes so grimdark, cynical and nihilist that it loses all sense of optimism and hope. Yeah, that's a deal-breaker all right.
I don't mind realism, and occasional darker episodes, but have to agree there. Some here already mentioned SGU, and it tried too hard to be edgy, dark, and BSG-lite. For BSG that worked, considering it literally was an end of (their) world tale. But not for Stargate. AND definitely not for Star Trek. Grimdark is the antithesis of the positive message Star Trek is traditionally known for.

Graphic violence and/or gore.

Graphic sex and/or nudity.

Either one of those would have me quickly abandon the show.
Agreed on graphic gore and violence. That is what Walking Dead is for. I don't need excessive violence or gore in Star Trek.

Sex and nudity doesn't bother me, but I prefer Star Trek to be more PG13 or less. I don't need an R rated Star Trek, just for the sake of edginess. But as to your later comments on the Enterprise Trip/T'pol scene, everyone's mileage may vary, but I didn't give that a second thought. It was really pretty tame. Even TOS had some costumes that still can be considered risque, and I don't have a problem with it at all.

If it's overtly politically preachy.

I welcome generalized moral themes and concepts. That's essential to Trek. But if it's a topical High-Five Fest for the creators' contemporary political views, I have better things to do.

Other than that, I'm in.
So not Star Trek ;)

I can't really care about some of the complaints people have had, like how the Klingons will look, what will the computer-interface be like, are the uniforms going to match what we know from that timeperiod. That's all so trivial.

Dealbreakers for me are shitty acting, bad writing, horrible directing, shoddy editing. The stuff that actually matters.
