Weed and other hobbies the "DIscovery" crew might/should have?

I still think that one of the main characters having a meth lab could be interesting. You could even deliver exposition that shows the nuances of daily life that way - the character could be standing there in his underwear and a gas mask cooking smack while giving a briefing to an Admiral over subspace about the latest away mission or something. You could even make a meth lab explosion the B plot of an episode to add color as needed.

Then afterwards they can discuss the pie eating contest on the ship.

Science fiction is usually based on science, not propaganda.

It doesn't have to be marijuana, then. You could invent a made-up plant that grows on some alien planet that does have this effect on people. (Again, I'm no scientist, so I can't judge one way or the other.) Maybe these people are powerful beings who don't want to be powerful, so they dull their senses 'cause something catastrophic happens when they give in to their powers. Like their people become like Gary Mitchell or Charlie Evans - wielding powers and destroying while giving little thought to how it affects others. But in their "saner" moments, they decide they are too dangerous and mellow themselves to save lives.

Crew members under the influence of some alien psychotropic substance is one of my favorite Trek tropes.

If some magic mushrooms do not somehow get into the crew mess causing a shipwide freak-out I will be sorely disappointed.

It can be neither. That premise sounds a lot like the "lotophagoi" Homer wrote about in the Odyssey some 2,800 years ago. In the Odyssey (and Greek Mythology) the Lotophagoi (literally the lotus-eaters) were a race of people living on an island dominated by lotus plants. The lotus fruits and flowers were the primary food of the island and were narcotic, causing the inhabitants to live in a peaceful apathy. I don't think Homer was influenced by 20th century politics.
Similar idea to "Men in Black" where the memories and experiences become to difficult and overwhelming to deal with. It actually could interesting to explore, kind of an opposite of "Plato's Stepchildren" where the food is eaten to avoid a catastrophe of similar to what had happened years ago. Also, reminiscent of the Federations' ban on genetic engineering , in order to avoid another Khan.

Dune played with this idea as well, limiting the how smart computers could be due to the Machine overlords. Also in Battlestar, were computer networks are almost forbidden due to the risk of a Cylon like intelligence as well as the exposure to Cylon viri.

You know... Now that I think about it. It really wouldn't be out of place. What with Scotty being quite a drinker and McCoy too. Plus McCoy was always fiddling with space-drugs. Go for it!

Space Golf.

Been done.

Just a idea but what if people still use the future version of the internet for fun? Also you can do what "Buffy" did when it would sometimes have a new band at the Bronze everytime they went there. Get real bands to play in some hangout spot on the ship and just say they are holograms of old music bands or something like that.

Well, at least you just solved the problem of how to get Lady Gaga on the show.
The more I think about it is you can even open up the idea and have comedians do a set for the crew.
The worst idea though just popped into my head. With this show being on CBS what if we find out the Discovery crew is a big fan of ancient tv shows and wouldn't you know it but their favorite show happens to be stuff like "CSI" and another show on the network. I can honestly say I have no idea what is on CBS other than "CSI" and Stephen Colbert. :)

IIRC they actually wanted to do this in Enterprise.
