I wonder if there will be an element of Heroes Reborn to the 'Infinity War' "two parter" with a team of Avengers facing a foe in the first part, and Captain Marvel having to pull together another team of heroes in the second part to rescue them.

I don't know if we can call it "basically a two-parter" when it's a separate story (particularly given the two films in between). At least, we don't know much for certain. What we do know for certain is it'll involve the same heroes and the same villain. That alone will make it much more interconnected than anything else we've seen. But it seems like one of those two parters where the second part is a radical change from the first. I'm trying to think of a good analogy. The only one coming to mind is in DS9, The Search pt. 1 and The Search pt. 2 are very different stories or maybe TNG's Chain of Command. But I also think it's very fair to say that we don't even have enough information for that.

The best I can think of is BACK to the Future 2 and 3. They're filming was news for being back to back. But storywise, it was fairly separate.

It could just be more like a traditional sequel, a la Star Wars and TESB. Fighting the same villain in a different story that takes place later, not immediately following the first one. The only difference here is that some of the characters get solo movies in-between.

Just a wild guess on my part, but I suspect it'll be something along the lines of the Avengers (or whatever is left of them by that point) all go missing/presumed dead by the end of Infinity War and by the time it rolls around to part 2 (or whatever they end up calling it) they'll turn up again, having been fighting off-world that whole time.

I suspect the keystone in where all this is going will depend on what their approach is going to be for Captain Marvel. They could plan on reforging the team (either mix of old & new or all new) around her or they could just add her to the surviving roster. Probably the former methinks.

The rest of the line-up of the New Warriors has been announced...
...founding members Night Thrasher, who’s described as some rich dude with a YouTube channel, and the kinetic ball-thrower Speedball will join this latest iteration of the team. Rounding it out will be later members Microbe, a shy hypochondriac who’s like Aquaman, except with germs and diseases, and Deborah Fields, a telekinetic who was added during the group’s 2005 TV show plot line by a producer looking to add “drama” to the team. She wasn’t around for very long, making her inclusion a bit of a wild card. Another mystery is the addition of Mister Immortal, a supposedly immortal being who founded the Great Lakes Avengers (which Squirrel Girl was in). He’s never been in the New [Warriors], so this is kind of uncharted territory.

Oh god, its so horrible its absolutely hilarious . I'm not even ticked off or offended anymore. Its like that DC show, Powerless. Its so bad its impossible to take it seriously, much less be mad at it.

Why am I getting a Mystery Men vibe out of this? I could enjoy something like that, but I doubt it fits the books.

Makes me want to see Nick Spencer's brilliant, under-read comic, Superior Foes of Spider-Man as a TV show..

One of the few Big Two comics I've actually enjoyed in the past 5 years

Hugo - We've got a blind date with destiny... and it looks like she's ordered the lobster.

The priority is not to fit the books. The priority is to use the books as the source material for creating an effective television show. Plenty of adaptations mix and match elements from the source or just use it as a loose launching point. Mystery Men itself is an example -- it has only the most tenuous resemblance to the comics it's based on, and it completely leaves out the lead character of those comics, Flaming Carrot. DC's Legends of Tomorrow is another -- a team series featuring a bunch of characters who were never a team in the comics, taking the names of groups from the comics like "Time Masters" and "Legion of Doom" and totally redefining their nature and membership, taking the superhero name "Waverider" and assigning it to a timeship instead, giving Vandal Savage the backstory of a different immortal villain, etc. The source books are the starting point of an adaptation, not the end goal.

Thanks for that supercilious answer.

The priority is clearly to Writer-splain things to anonymous people on the internet.

I am fully aware of how adaptations work, but having no idea what the property is like or what its styles had been in the past I was unsure if this route hit the mark. Perhaps I made a mis-assumption of the material? But who cares, I can always be corrected.

Hugo - :techman:

Saw Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 last night. Good stuff and a fine continuation of the story...

So Adam Warlock has been announced bringing us a huge step towards Infinity War. Seems like there's not much left to easter egg on the subject. There's one stone left to add to the lore, if Thanos doesn't have it already, and damn near everything is in place.

Then, it's nice that it's now confirmed that all of Stan Lee's cameos (in the MCU at least) are all the same character. Fans said for years that he's a Watcher (Uatu) and they delivered it in a credits scene.

Just got to say, I'm loving the whole MCU continuity thing. From the streets of New York in the Netflix series to the world events with the Avengers and Agents of SHEILD, to the galactic stuff with Thor and Guardians of the Galaxy. Bravo Marvel.

Now that Adam Warlock has been confirmed, here's hoping we'll hear casting news soon.

I hope Thor: Ragnarok has a Guardians cameo to demonstrate Asgard/Thor's awareness of events in that part of space.

I'm sure there will be, it fits perfectly and GotG is so hot right now, they wouldn't waste the oportunity. I predict they'll keep it a secret and then not too far from opening day there'll be a leak. Well, that's how I would do it if I were in charge.;)

From what Thor said at the end of AoU it's clear he's already at least generally aware of the events of GotG1. Plus of course Knowhere and the Collector were himself introduced in the last Thor movie's post credit scene. So by that measure at least the connection is already established.

“We talk about it all the time,” Gunn said of his role in the overall Marvel Cosmic Universe. “It’s already a part of what I’m doing with Marvel and the conversations that Kevin and I have every day. When we’re talking about ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3,’ and that story, that’s a story that will lead to other stories. It’s innate to the DNA that that’s the end of a trilogy but it’s the beginning of a whole other element of the Marvel Cosmic universe. That’s a part of what I’m doing now.”

So, does that mean that Guardians will end after 3 movies, like Iron Man et al? I'd honestly expected it to be the exception that would keep going but with a rotating cast, like the Avengers. Maybe the Guardians will also guest star in other cosmic movies. Either way, it certainly sounds like Marvel intends the Cosmic end of the MCU to be a much bigger part of phase 4.

No, you are quite right. An earlier interview with Gunn confirms this - the current iteration of GotG will end after their trilogy, but the series as a whole will evolve to add in new members so the Guardians can continue onwards - just not necessarily with Star Lord/Gamora etc:

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and the Future of Marvel

No doubt something similar will happen with the Avengers team, like in the comics, shifting and morphing through different iterations. Obviously the equation is far more complex given Actors rather than drawn characters are involved, but if Marvel want to innovate, diversify and refresh their universe they will need to move beyond the core Iron Man/Captain America/Thor cast eventually.

Or create an Ultimate/Multiverse approach where IM/CA etc can be re-cast and shift into the ongoing MCU where/when wanted/needed when RDJ/Chris Evan's contracts expire and are not refreshed.

If they want to hold onto those core characters (that have driven the profit margin for the past 9 years), in Avengers 4 they could "fracture" the multiverse allowing them to, say, kill Hemsworth's Thor and rotate in a new one, allowing them to make Thor 4 etc without the endless universe resets a la Spiderman.

I sense the MCU could take a sharp decline In interest once the series tries to move away from that core for both actor and character reasons. Comic adaptations are so based on their core characters that historically, even the published sources have suffered sales drops when moving too far away from the flagship characters (hence the endless reboots, usually going back to a version of a "prime" continuity and/or universe).

Unlike the actor changes in the James Bond series (based on actors becoming disenchanted, too old, etc.), a drastic actor and/or character change in the MCU would seem arbitrary--change for the sake of it, or growing actor paydays. Despite some of the MCU films not being all that great, the characters--especially Steve Rogers and Stark--have been so linked to each other and the plots of the films. Essentially both wind and sail of the MCU's ship.

Except a bunch of MCU movies that had nothing to do with the core Phase 1 characters have been doing really well. Doctor Strange and Ant-Man were both very popular, and of course GotG 1 was completely disconnected to the Avengers characters and people loved it. While Cap, Thor, Iron Man, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Hulk, etc will always be big characters, I think that the MCU has proven it can and almost certainly will succeed even without them. The movies are different from the comics, the "classic" characters, while popular, aren't the only way to succeed.

I bet in the coming years Ant-Man, Dr. strange, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, etc will do as well as the old characters (well, ok, the MCU probably won't get another character as big as RDJ's Iron Man, but he's a very unique situation).

Just as with Hugh Jackman and Logan soon the decision will have to come because the two Chris's won't be able to keep their bodies in super shape . I am of the opinion that the actor was much more important than the characters and there should be no reason to reboot and try to tell another Captain story when you have a Black Panther ready to fill that movie slot every three years
