Here is how I think it might have played out. World War III killed all humans on earth. We are talking about a nuclear war so i'm not sure how they could have survived, something like that. Vulcans have proably been watching over humanity for along time. We know from "Enterprise" they were first introduced during Sputnik mission in the 1950's. What if the vulcans found the humans to be a species worthy of great potential but also with ovious flaws they would need to move past, so they choose to watch over them in hopes of seeing some growth. Humans end killing each other though, but the Vulcans choose to perserve them, by recreating them in robot form. The idea is they could remae them were they still had all that potential they show but also find away to program them in way were they would move beyond the major flaws but in away that the human robots would see as natural change instead of computer programming.
I also asume these robot humans would be more like the cylons on "Battlestar Galatica" instead of typical robots made with parts and wiring and whatnot. That means that everything we think humans did in stark trek like creating starfleet and exploring space was actually being controlled by Vulcans in secret. Even first contact was a big ruse were the vulcans just pretended to be first encountering them. Also it means that T'pol was secretly in control of the NX-01 and Spock was actually in control of the Enterprise instead of KIrk. Eventually the robot humans got to a point were they no longer needed to be controlled to that level and Vulcans started treating them as equals which led to the more evolved "humans" we see in the 24th century.
