So What Are you Reading?: Generations

The Klingon novelization suffered from being too literal an adaptation of the game, with a nominally "main" character who was just an empty void for the player to insert oneself into, occasionally asked to make a token decision but otherwise a total non-entity. It read more like a hint book for the game than a story in its own right. Diane Carey's Starfleet Academy game novelization did better by building more of an original story around the events of the game.
Yes, there really was a missed opportunity when it came to Pok. I could see why he wasn't very well fleshed out in Gowron's story, but once the character had appeared on DS9, I assumed we would learn more about him or see things from his perspective. Instead, the novel just ends. Very disappointing.

The only redeeming feature for me is that it shows Gowron in a different light to what was represented in TNG and DS9. I would be interested in reading any other stories that predominantly feature Gowron if anyone knows if any. I'll also be sure to check out the novelization of Starfleet Academy to see how a CD-ROM novelization should be done.

I finished Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Long Mirage by David R. George III.
I'm now reading Caliban's War, the second novel in The Expanse series, by James S. A. Corey.

Even more exasperating when getting two-thirds of the way into the book and it just ends! I'm then treated to pages of behind the scenes about the making of the game!?! Written by David Mack!?! Jesus, why didn't they get Mack to write the novelization and left the background stuff to the other pair? At least, I'd have been guaranteed a cracking story then.:klingon:
Klingon was written in 1996, and David Mack didn't start writing Trek fiction until 2001. Him & John Ordover did write the script for Starship Down in 1995, so he did have a Trek credit at that point, just not for books or comics.

I wish you the best of luck with it! :bolian: I trudged through the first book back in 2005, needless to say, I haven't yet moved on to the second novel.

I'm still stumbling through it. I mean I have a lot going on right now, but OMG. I've been reading a lot of trek books recently and this trilogy is killing m trek buzz. I am going to finish #2 and then tackle #3, but I am surprised by how much I just don't care about this story.

I have to warn you, Jbarney; if you didn't like #1 or #2, #3 probably won't save it for you. :p

Most people seemed to find #1 the best, #2 was my own favorite, but I haven't found anyone that didn't agree that #3 was the weakest part of String Theory.

Great.....I think I will try to finish #2 tonight....and then just buckle down and try to read #3 in a short time.....avoid interruptions if possible. I think the reading just becomes more enjoyable.....even if the story is lacking, when large chunks of it are taken in at one time. However, I can't wait to be done with it.

I finished the main story in The Dark Crystal novelization and also started reading the first digital collection of DC Comics' The Flintstones reboot comic. I've been hearing nothing about how great this in since it started, and I can already see why after just the first issue. I got really interested when I heard how this really gets into a lot of really relevant social issues, and they already started some of that. I think this could actually be one of the few times where a reboot actually makes better use of a premise than the original did.

I was really wary when I first heard DC was doing this Hanna Barbara adaptation wave, and it's had some missteps (Scooby-Doo Apocalypse is just unnecessary; was curious at first so I gave it a shot, but I dropped that one pretty quick). But yeah, this and Future Quest have both been amazing.

One thing I've noticed in the Scooby Apocalypse previews I've looked at, is that the characters seem to do nothing but bitch at each other. I understand that in this version they've kind of accidentally ended up together, but that kind of stuff drives me crazy.

Yeah, that's pretty accurate, and that was one of the things that drove me away. Every issue felt like it was retreading the same ground interpersonally speaking.

I'm finally going to get into some VAN reading this weekend with Distant Early Warning but I had a package arrive earlier this week with my omnibus of The Captain's Table so I jumped back into Pike mode with "Where Sea Meets Sky." It was my first Captain's Table read and it was a quick and fun adventure with giant space titans and krakens, and I enjoyed the banter in-between chapters amongst the patrons of the bar. Now for some VAN reading.

VAN was excellent. I read all of them in a few months and enjoyed all of them....as for me....puttering along....on page 329 of String Theory #2.....yawn.

I thought a bit about what to read next and finally decided to proceed going to the 23rd century for the next week. In the two weeks after that I am going to (try to...) catch up with the relaunch novels, or more precisely the ones Cross Cult published. Namely that would be TF: Peaceable Kingdoms, TNG: The Light Fantastic, DS9: The Missing, TNG: Takedown, S31: Disavowed and the Prometheus trilogy. Furthermore I plan to read DS9: Sacraments of Fire and DS9: Ascendance, which I already purchased some time ago and the eBooks Absent Enemies and Lust's Latinum Lost (and Found).

Today I finished TOS: Constitution and I liked it.

I read issue #2 of Flintstones, and this one continued the quality of the first one. Since the other thread didn't get much of a reaction I'll just post my thoughts here.
The two main storylines were pretty fun, with Bedrock discovering the joys and not so joyus parts of buying and owning "crap", and then with the Church of Animism's attempts to find something to worship.
I think "We're worshipping a vacuum cleaner" has to be my favorite line so far. Poor Peaches going for god to vacuum cleaner is one hell of a demotion. Dino's origin as a out of date, appliance that didn't do anything, who Fred saved from being "recycled" was a nice origin for him. I like Barney using Bamm-Bamm's super strength to con people into buying the vitamins.
EDIT: Oh yeah, one more thing, Powergoat!

I just breezed through Distant Early Warning for my last pre-VAN teaser. I enjoy the S.C.E. team of the U.S.S. Lovell and what little snapshot this gave me of Starbase 47's crew. I'm still deciding on my visual casting of some of the characters. The mysterious signal in the Taurus Reach sets up so many intriguing possibilities and I'm looking forward to Harbinger next. It was a good set up for what I hope is a solid VAN series.
