Do you think we might see enterprise under Pike on the show?

Then it wouldn't hurt to feature him. The target audience wouldn't know him from anyone else they put on the big E if it is shown and it's the pre-Pike era.

True. And I wouldn't be averse to seeing an elderly British gentleman named Bob in the background somewhere...

If the show is about the battle at Donatu V then I think we might get a mention/glimpse of the Enterprise launch as this happened in the same year, but I don't think Pike will feature...

The Enterprise is already in service at the time Discovery takes place.

If we see the Enterprise, I have a feeling it's going to look something like this:

Or this:

Rather than a slavish recreation of the ship from "The Cage"

I love Bob! As long as we get the Rowan Atkinson pronunciation, I'm in.

Memory Alpha has April commanding the Enterprise from 2245-2250. We could see the tail end of his time onboard.
DSC takes place about 10 years before TOS, so it's around 2255. I guess that could still somewhat be in 2250 but my money is on somewhen between 2253 and 2258.

Guys, clearly the entire reason the show is set when it is is so there can be some fun run-ins with older characters, ships, events etc.

There is no other rational reason to set it in that time frame.

Memory Alpha has The Cage in 2254 & the rest of the series 2265-2269, so yeah, maybe a little too late for Captain April, but they could encounter Commodore April (2250-2270). He'd be around 55 during DSC.

I guess- but isn't the prime universe already clearly separate from our own reality, given WWIII, Eugenics timeline, technology mismatches and the rest of the anachronisms?

Indeed, although there is a novel duology that nicely reconciles the Eugenic Wars with reality.

But again, since when is a novel canon? (Please don't mistake me, I enjoyed The Eugenics Wars.)

It isn't, I just wanted to mention it.

And thanks for the kind words, folks.

Meanwhile, sight unseen, it's probably too early to know for sure why DISCOVERY chose this era and this story. And chances are, there was probably more than just one reason.

I love that she appears to be standing on the saucer of a huge starship! Perhaps from the Kelvinverse? :D
God only knows, but the design is a modern HD spin on the pilot era ship and frankly she looks grand! From the hull and thruster details to the lit deflector dish and enhanced pylons to the tapered nacelles she evokes Trek in HD. As for the kelvinverse I wish we'd see ships like the Kelvin and it's counterparts, but sadly and probably for the best Paramount and CBS Trek are separate experiences and universes. I'm just hoping Discovery gives credit where due to its history but is bold enough to look to make new experiences that bring in new Trekkies and continue to explore the idea that humanity has a brilliant future ahead for itself. But on topic lol, I hope a Connie like the Vektor Enterprise is used to be "faithful" to the core TOS design.
