Nintendo NX / Switch Discussion

They did, in January.

The dock, and just the dock, the cheap 10 cent piece of plastic is $60. if you want the cords with the dock it's $90.

25 cents worth of felt with be in the Super Deluxe Dock, that will be $150.

Well, I've got to hand it to Nintendo. They know how to accessorize. In this case though, they seem to be really milking their customers, which could backfire in the long run.

Yeh he points out it's just hardcore zealots but still wtf some gamers need to grow up.

If GamerGate taught us anything, it's that there's a subset of gamers who simply never will. The world must bend to their immature sense of entitlement, or else they will throw tantrums and death threats until it does.

Wouldn't most of those have to get out of Mum's basement first?

So am reading the Switch frame rate issues are being caused by wifi scanning and the problem almost dissapered when wifi was disabled for the console. Nintendo are going to release a firmware update to amend the issue, so that's good news.

Any news like this is good news in my opinion, but do you have a source for that? Edited: I googled it myself and found this page if anyone's interested in reading up on it some more.

Also, I went for it, and purchased 1 2 Switch (do your worst, I can take it ;) ) I also improted 'I am Setsuna' it's only available digitally in the U.S. And since the Japanese version will play as English in English Switch's, I went for it. I only spent a little more than the digital version due to shipping costs.

Additional edit: Speaking of wifi, I'm not impressed so far. Granted I haven't done much with it except download a few demos, my system seems to struggle just to stream a 1 to 2 minute trailer from the eShop. I'll be playing on the Splatoon 2 Testfire here next weekend, so I'm hoping to see some better results then. But if this is indicative of the online quality I'm starting to become a little hesitant about paying for their online services come the fall.

The quality, or rather lack thereof, of the Wii and Wii U's online services wasn't enough of an indicator?

Well you know, I figured if they were going to start charging for it they might have actually put in some effort to make it worth it.

I'm gonna be part of the Splatoon 2 Global Testfire next weekend. This will be a great way to see the Switch's online in action.

I'm not sure you comprehend just how much Nintendo has changed since Satoru Iwata's passing. Iwata did a great deal of running interference between Kyoto and the Nintendo of America offices in Seattle, but once he died and Kimishima took over, it was made immediately clear that NOA was losing its seat at the table (hence Fils-Aime being effectively demoted from his seat on the board of directors to an "executive officer," with no voting rights) and Kyoto was going to be calling all the shots.

And NCL has never quite "understood" online gaming, because in that country's culture, gaming is still primarily seen as a social thing for people to do together in the same room, not virtually -- NCL, in particular, has never fully moved on from Hiroshi Yamauchi's philosophy of "game is toy." Nintendo's been dragged, kicking and screaming into the online gaming era, and it's never fully embraced it because despite NOA's best efforts, NCL doesn't get it (and Kimishima, in particular, has never got it; he's a banker who found a way to make hojillions of dollars through Pokemon and Amiibo). Even the design of the Switch, with those fucking tiny Joy-Con controllers, screams that it was designed and developed without a hint of input from the American part of the company.

I assume that means the console will finally manage a real framerate above the 30fps undocked and 20 docked?

If it doesn't manage 60fps smoothly within 6 months, then...yeah I'll stick with a real console.

Especially with a game as complex as Zelda. Lots of things going on in that game, pushing the processor in ways it was likely never meant to process.

That's a permanent no then?

The Tegra X1 line using the Maxwell architecture, upon which the Switch is based, is basically Nvidia's effort to take a high-powered GeForce GPU and bake it into an SoC that can be used in mobile devices. Between that core part of the hardware and the 4GB of RAM (lol) that the Switch has ... yeah, no, it's never going to push 1080p/60 on a consistent basis unless you're playing fucking Tetris or something.

It's becoming more and more evident that the Switch was originally developed as a 3DS successor (the industrial design alone, like the placement of ports, screams this), and then the Wii U faceplanted and people in Kyoto said, "Shit. Can we make this into a home console, too?"

(Edit: To be fair, this wouldn't be new for Nintendo. The DS originally came about due to Hiroshi Yamauchi wanting a Nintendo-branded PDA, because he hated using Palm devices.)

It did come off as more of a handheld successor, with them claiming it was *not* a successor to the Wii U (which they immediately pulled when the Switch went live) and pushing the mobile aspect.

That's fine, if they worked entirely from that basis. But by pushing it being a 'hybrid' they've fucked themselves over twice. By producing a home console that's ricidulously underpowered and a mobile device that's extremely impractical with a piss poor battery life that an iPhone can laugh at.

If it was to be the 3DS successor, then they should have just done that and had a very slightly smaller version with 3DS port and maybe the two detachable controllers that resembled the New 3DS control layout each. And had a much much better battery.

And you know, bothered investing in the Wii U properly and maybe left it on the market, and had the Switch be an alternative to it's massive controller tablet for multiplay.

But they really don't want to make either sense or money anymore.

It's hard to invest in something (the WiiU) when the install base is so low. I'm not saying it was a good decision for Nintendo to stop supporting it, but even Third Parties were staying away. No one who already bought a WiiU was given an incentive to get one.

I got one for two reasons, Smash and the new Zelda game (and look how well the latter turned out). I love the WiiU, but the userbase just wasn't there, and it was clear it would never get it.

I just wonder if a portable console with games that cost $60 a pop, will gain traction?

Was it made for Japanese hands which could be smaller, or other people with small hands?
