Mass Effect: ANDROMEDA

Oh yeah, i'll be dead to the world for a bit after Andromeda is released. Especially since my wife is expecting our first born in early april! I wanna get one good playthrough in before fatherhood takes over.

Just read the beta was cancelled. Not a good sign really. Currently trying to get through Dragon Age Inquisition and man....dragging.

Meh, it was a multiplayer tech test. Not the greatest optics maybe but they're still going to have live multiplayer at PAX East instead of a beta. At this point... whatever?

Yeah if it's anything like ME3 or DAI the MP side of things is being run by a separate team, so problems on the one side aren't likely to directly impact the other. Despite previous successes, the SP is still the main selling point, so I doubt it'll hurt sales much.

Just browsing on Amazon before and besides the game (Code in a box, Origin code etc), they were also selling a separate empty steel book case for it (About 15 quid at the time):vulcan:

Ok, I was excited before. But this, this is a whole new level. I know they mentioned before being able to look out the windows of the Tempest was a thing, but actually seeing it!

OK, I think it's time to go into media blackout, I suspect things are going to get spoilery fairly soon.

Holy shit, that is some incredibly rough motion-capture. That's a level of stilted I haven't seen since GTA Vice City.

Edit: Also, holy lol at the transitions. Feel like I'm back in 1993 or whatever with Wing Commander III.

Sad to say that launch trailer didn't do very much for me at all. Between the song choice and the fact that so far nothing about the actual plot or villains has really interested me, so far it's been tough to get a toehold on anything the truly excites me.

I did however watch a little bit of the livestream out of Pax today and the character interactions and the humour seems very promising. I think this game's make or break for me will hinge upon it's ability to make me care about the characters. The tricky thing is that historically Bioware has been very hit and miss for me in this regard and typically, it's the kind of thing you only get a feel for about 15hrs in.

Between the song choice

Everyone online have been banging on about the song and I simply don't get it, first it's not an album Bioware/EA are releasing and 2nd, I think it's a rather good song. The trailer does offer little in the way of who exactly the bad guys are/motives but that means more surprise in the game ;)

I guess it's just that the song doesn't really suit the feel of a Mass Effect game. Music works on a very emotional level so if something feels incongruous there it's going to provoke a negative emotional reaction. Indeed, it's as common a complaint as you say, clearly something is wrong.

As for the bad guys, it's not so much the lack of specifics as it gives us *nothing* but "these are the bad guys". You don't need to know their motivations but at the same time you need to convey something interesting with them. So far they're just lumpy mooks with weird eyes and that's not interesting.

I kinda like that we really have no idea about the villians or their motivations. It adds a sense of unknown danger, which works given the context of the game.

On another note, I gave up trying to keep up with posting videos. There'sbeen so many lately I've started to avoid them, especially with PAX this weekend. But definitely check out IGN if you want more insight. They've had "first" vids up everyday this week.

After seeing the recommended PC specs for this, I'll probably just get it for PS4. My PC's missing a video card right now anyway.

PS4pro on a 4K TV is how I'm playing. Will probably pick it up for XBone at some point too, just because.

I played the trilogy on the XBox 360 so I will probably get it on my XB1 instead of PS4 but I will wait to see if the reviews highlight any real differences.

This is actually really encouraging to me, because the characters and their interactions is what Bioware most often gets right in my opinion. It's what made the Citadel DLC so deeply rewarding in the Shepard trilogy, gave ME3 overall such high payoffs after building up the characters especially in ME2, and it's what made Dragon Age 2 have ultimately the most tight and gripping story in that series.

Agreed on all points.
Honestly I don't think the main plot matters all that much if they do a good enough job on the cast, the the weak villains are troublesome. Who knows though, maybe the Kett are going to be a bait & switch like Saren. Clearly they're avoiding going into detail about the nature of the Remnant or the scourge, so I imagine that's probably where the real story is.

All that said, I can't pretend that so far I'm struggling to feel really excited about this. Part of that may due to my having no pre-existing attachments to any of the characters as I've had in every Bioware game sinceME & DAO. We'll see.
