DS9 on blu ray?

I'm not sure if "automation" will lead to anything but marginal savings, unless and until someone invents a robot capable of taking crates of film reels out of a salt mine, sifting through them, scanning the elements, and reassembling them to match the original episodes.

It would be interesting to see a breakdown of the cost to upgrade a series like DS9. I'm not saying that because I believe it would lead to anything to see such a breakdown, I'd just be interested to see it.

I think HTV Illuminate did that two steps in a mostly automated process for the remastering of the first 9 seasons of "The X-Files". They were able to remaster the complete series in only 18 months.

They've said before that for the CGI, they entire scene files are intact. The live action matchup would be relatively easy for the right software to do.

Finding and rescanning the film elements, while a second group gathers the old harddrives would be tedious for the startup of the project.

Paramount/CBS still maintain that it's not going to make enough profit in sales, given that they knew they had all these assets ready over three years ago.

So I don't know how dirt cheap remastering is going to have to get for them to consider it finally feasible.

I don't know if it was already mentioned here, but Ira Steven Behr the former showrunner of DS9 is making a documentary about DS9.
He has launched a crowfunding campaign, which topped the initial goal of $150,000 within 24h.

Many fans see this campaign as big trend indicator to CBS to remaster DS9 in HD.
Some days are left now and every voice counts, I guess.
So please participate and vote for DS9 in HD and spread this campaign across the www.

I know, it may not lead to a HD remastering, but it is the only thing we fans can do at the moment, so let's try.

I'm sure they're watch. For everyone who will contribute to a kickstart campaign there's 10 more who would buy something once it's producted.

If there really are 55,000 fans ready to buy a Blu Ray DS9, that's only $364 each to break even (assuming the oft quoted $20M is about right). I for one would easily be prepared to pay that, and probably a bit more.

CBS has more options than Blu-Ray for HD release. As it is Blu-Ray is on its way out as far as TV goes, unless you are talking mini-series. (They could always do a HD release on SD card---make a custom SD card like Nintendo's DS cartridges where once the video is loaded the card is "Locked" in the Save and make the files Read-Only. There's always USB.)

But it's funny, I was just talking to a few guys recently who were telling me that they bought the DS9 DVD's years ago, but the DVD's have just sat on their shelf unwatched. But now they are watching the entire series on Netflix and are enjoying it.

I hope that's the $500,000 stretch goal. I know it's not exactly how it works, as the startup costs would be a major factor, but if you divide the estimated $20 million by 176, you get $113,636.36. So, if that's about 45 minutes of clips, then with $75,000, that would be about a half hour's worth of clips. Even if it's 15 minutes, that'd be pretty cool.

I just want DS9 on blu-ray done to meet the same standards as TNG, no matter how much it would cost me. I'm tired of flipping between breathtakingly crystal clear TNG and blurry, washed-out, purple-tinted* DS9.
Well, and Voyager too.

*No really, for some reason the last three seasons of DS9 have this unnatural purple filter over them, on the DVDs at least. Possibly a result of the type of videotape they used to edit the show together. Take a look and you'll see what I mean.
