Star Wars Rebels Season Three (spoilers)

Just watched today's new episode.....It was nicely done and sets up some interesting stuff. Looking forward to how they use the seeds they planted here.

I really did enjoy Today's episode. It was fun.

Also, according to Pablo Hidalgo, they started Rebels Season 1 talks a year and a couple months before Season 1 aired, if that is of interest to anyone.

They're constantly talking and making stories, I wouldn't be surprised if they already had a few more seasons worth of stuff, they did for Clone Wars when it ended.

They finally get around to giving us an explanation of what the "pens" on the uniforms are for.

They've been Code Cylinders since the EU IIRC.

Heck, I think the security keys that Kyle picks up in the Dark Forces games are meant to be them, since you usually loot them off dead Officers.

Much better. Certainly makes up for the last two lack-luster episodes.

I like the way the story was weaved together: you had the rebels doing what they might normally do in an episode when trying to get somebody out, yet at the same time there was Thrawn's countering weaved with it, putting him a step ahead of the rebels.

It was certainly nice to see him use more than just a little critical thinking skills and showcase what makes him so threatening, while also showing he's not somebody to be messed with in a physical fight, that he can hold him own and has his own fighting style.

If it stays at just this level for the rest of the season, it'll be good, but I hope it is stepped up.

As with all Rebels Recon episodes, a short preview of the next episode at the end.

I think reprogramming Thrawn's map of rebel base candidates is going to backfire. He probably had the old map memorized already, and as soon as he notices that one of the candidates has been deleted, he'll know it's the base. I'm surprised they didn't reveal that in the last scene.

Otherwise, Kallus was very impressive here. His scheme worked very well -- maybe a little too well. And David Oyelowo did a terrific acting job.

I just realized that that ex-Imperial droid, whatever his name is, is basically Marvin from Hitchhiker's Guide.

Huh, I had no idea Yularen was the mustachioed dude in the Death Star briefing room in ANH. Looking at his Wookieepedia page, I also had no idea he appreared later in the film when Luke and Han are waiting for the elevator. Mind. Blown.

I thought the exact same thing while I was watching the episode.

^It is supposed to be an Alan Rickman impersonation, but I don't know that it's specifically meant to be a nod to HHGTTG. Maybe I'm just old but to me, this will always be Marvin's voice. ;)

I had exactly the same thought. I mean I can't imagine someone of Thrawn's intellect doesn't have an eidetic memory, that's usually fairly basic for this type of character.

On the other hand, the episode went out of it's way to make sure Kallus wasn't told the location of the base, so perhaps there's another wrinkle coming up?

It's like "Attack of the Clones"
"Lost a planet Thrawn has. How embarrassing …"

I was talking about the droid's overall personality and the role he played in the story; the voice was the least of it. And of course Stephen Moore is the Marvin I had in mind; Rickman was a latecomer, and it never even occurred to me that the droid here was meant to be an impersonation of him (if so, it's a pretty bad one).

I wonder if Ezra was telling the truth though. He initially did not want to tell Kallus the location to the base, so maybe he's planning ahead and setting Thrawn up by providing a false planet?

or the planet that he removed from the map wasn't were the base was located.

that's what I'm talking about. I would think there has to be some kind of out for the rebels here and a way to take down Thrawn and that was a perfect opportunity to set things up. I suppose Kallus could also know that Thrawn knows he's Fulcrum, and does a double-double cross thing to set him up.

Right. This was what I was thinking. Ezra was pretty adamant at first about not revealing the location of the base, so why would you do an about-face so easily under a scenario instigated by the very person who you're trying to keep the information away from, for now?

But, it's hard to know what level Star Wars is operating on. This episode took an interest in addressing things like surveillance that are usually glossed over and that make a lot of activity in a lot of episodes utterly implausible. At least this time, they addressed disabling the surveillance, which basically sets up an out regarding at least many if not most or all of the other times it should have come up: we can suppose that surveillance was disabled at those times too, as part of the course, even when they hadn't talked about it.

Was Chopper's modification of Thrawn's map thorough enough to get all of the backups that Thrawn's system might have automatically made? Or, did Thrawn use a non-standard or manual system or have additional copies that couldn't be reached over the network by Chopper right then, or did Thrawn simply have the original map memorized? Was it the actual base that got changed, or a decoy? Shouldn't Ezra alert the Rebels that they really should move, anyway? We'll have to see!

I suppose Kallus could also know that Thrawn knows he's Fulcrum, and does a double-double cross thing to set him up.
Could be, but that would be taking thing a bit far, in my opinion. Just what would Kallus expect that he could accomplish in those circumstances? To think that he could accomplish anything, he would have to figure out that Thrawn wouldn't eliminate him right away and that Thrawn would just be stringing him out (on a "long game," like discussed earlier in the episode). I really think that Thrawn has outsmarted Kallus at this stage, but we'll see about this, too! Thrawn outsmarted at least Ezra, because Ezra had thought it safe to simply discard his disguise. If only Ezra could have watched the way the scene was filmed, and noted the way that the camera lingered on his helmet after he left his cell.... ;)

And his handcuffs. Luckily it seems Ezra was wearing two pairs of handcuffs, since he had them on again in the next scene.

And yeah, add me to the group that was expecting Thrawn to say that he noticed which planet had been switched out by Chopper.

No reason not to play this straight. Thrawn has outsmarted Kallus. He will use Kallus to lure out the rebels. The only question is if Kallus will be trusted (or rescued) by the rebels afterwards, or if he'll be suspected of really being an imperial agent, like Ezra said. Or maybe the show will just kill him off, and that'll be that.

If I were the betting type, I'd put money on Kallus going the way or Ruhk by the end of the season (who BTW got a name drop in this episode as Thrawn's override code.) So yes, I don't think we'll be seeing Thrawn in season 4 either.

Also, am I crazy or does Yularen bare more than a passing resemblance to Pellaeon? I know Yularen's is straight from ANH, but I wonder if they picked him as much for that similarity as the for his being a TCW character. Could just be a happy co-incidence I suppose.

Not me - thought it was "rook" as in the chess piece.

In Zahn's trilogy that introduced the character of Thrawn it's mentioned the Palleon took over the Chimera's captain after his predecessor died in battle and that Thrawn found him and the ship rather than already being aboard or has that be totally decanonised? now?
