I kinda like the grittiness of the old delta, but this new one is fine.
Whether or not it was intentional, it was fairly consistent on screen, and reinforced by ENT's design for the Defiant mission patch. And internal memos indicate that the singular ship logo was not intentional, at least as far as GR was concerned.
We'll more than likely have:
A) Tri-colour uniform system ignoring The Cage or a unique uniform altogether.
I like the old logo better.![]()

B) The Delta, as the overall Starfleet symbol.
C) Blended aspects of both timelines, as well as modern technology like touch screens, tablets etc making more of an appearance over antiquated TOS systems.
D) No use of "tapes" and "radio" and "circuit" being used as terms constantly.
What the hell? It looks terrible. It looks like the trek logo was cut up and sellotaped back together by a 4 year old. From the official Discovery Facebook page:

I personally love the individual ship patches, and have since the first release of the Star Trek Concordance. And I would generally agree that it would make sense, given the timeline, and the application of different patches for ships, or fleets, or assignments (Many flag officers, and starbase officers had the Starfleet Command "starburst" emblem, especially Commander John Crichton).Whether or not it was intentional, it was fairly consistent on screen, and reinforced by ENT's design for the Defiant mission patch.
When I saw Star Trek 2009, I guessed that the fleetwide adoption of the Kelvin delta may have been a result of that ship's destruction, just as the Prime Universe's fleetwide adoption of the Enterprise's delta was a result of their completion of the first five-year mission. The Prime Universe may have had a different policy for patches, which may have included reusing them, not unlike unretired numbers on sports jerseys. That could have explained the reuse by the Kelvin and the Prime 1701 of the Franklin's design, itself a reuse of the Friendship One emblem.
I'd prefer they use a unique mission patch, or have some reason it's using the delta. I think uniforms are the easiest thing they can have stay as close to canon as possible, as they've done on TNG, DS9, and ENT, when they've shown the TOS era, especially since The Cage uniforms had a lot more sturdy variants that would hold up today, with only minor alterations. I don't expect them to do so, but it would be nice.
A and B I see as extremely likely, with C being more of a possibility or some weird hybrid of multiple techs. Also, as odd as it sounds, for D, I still use the term "tape" "radio" and "circuits" even in passing phrases, so I'm 100% certain that they will be eliminated. But, given the attitude of reaching a more contemporary audience, I could very well be wrong on this one. We'll more than likely have:
A) Tri-colour uniform system ignoring The Cage or a unique uniform altogether.
B) The Delta, as the overall Starfleet symbol.
C) Blended aspects of both timelines, as well as modern technology like touch screens, tablets etc making more of an appearance over antiquated TOS systems.

That has been my feeling overall as well.I honestly like nothing about the promotional artwork we've seen so far - not the logo design, nor the emblem, nor the lighting or texturing or composition. You can see more sophisticated typography and CG design in fan films, and that's not a comparison I make lightly - I'm not generally of the belief that even the best of the fan films do better than just make it over the bar of professional production quality.
I'm always happy to see more optimism and brighter designs.I like the delta more than it was before... But it also shows they are more more going back and try to fit in, rather than have something completely new and unique.
What I'm still unhappy about is the font though. That was (and still is) terrible. Either you use the old, clear TOS-font. Or (in my view the better option) you create a completely new font that still "feels" Trek. But don't, just don't use the old TOS-font, just with same unnecessary serifs added.
That being said, I'm pretty sure this isn't final. Remember the crappy DS9-promotion logo? Yeah... During the next half a year we're probably going to see something completely different...
I'm mostly happy the logo is a bit brighter than before! Love me some optimistic Trek. Especially in these times...
Which is all fine with this "old fart"........canon is great, but building a new fan base is important as well.....I don't use many tapes or circuits around the house in 2017....they shouldn't either.
