New Discovery logo

The seam/separation aside, the overall design is lot closer to the proper shape -- which I'm glad to see. The previous one looks like it was drawn hastily by a graphic design intern who didn't give a shit.

I'm not sure I'm into the seam/break bit, looks a little clumsy and like an attempt to find something new to do with an old logo but without any cool ideas.

And Dennis is quite right about the CG work and the general look of these things. The uninspired 50th anniversary Delta was rendered better.

One more vote for the "old" one. It looked "newer" and more inspired. It showed that Discovery (the crew, the ship, the TV series) is part of Starfleet/Star Trek and yet also separated and different. The "new" one is simply the delta cut and glued together again like a small child's arts and crafts project.

This is really great and really boosts my confidence in the new series. I hope I didn't make any grammar mistakes, I'm just so excited.

edit: Now I have found words: New and groundbreaking.

I'm wondering if they're suggesting a division by keeping this in two parts. Something like the larger half of the Delta represents the Prime universe, the smaller the Kelvin, or perhaps that the Discovery mission/crew as a discrete unit from the larger Starfleet body (which would feed into 31 being a plot point).

We'll more than likely have:
C) Blended aspects of both timelines, as well as modern technology like touch screens, tablets etc making more of an appearance over antiquated TOS systems.
D) No use of "tapes" and "radio" and "circuit" being used as terms constantly.

Great. I'm really looking forward to Discovery's technobabble about "apps" and "OS" and the terms "swipe", "tap" and "pinch" being used constantly.

I cannot believe that fans are upset with Discovery using the Delta. After all, in canon the Delta is not the Enterprise insignia but is in actuality the 'The United Earth Space Probe Agency' (UESPA) exploration insignia which was later incorporated into the Starfleet emblem.

Here it is on the Friendship One probe launched by the UESPA in 2067:
(The Delta had been amalgamated with the United Nations emblem, but is clearly the Delta)

And again in 2155 where the UESPA Delta had been incorporated as part of the Starfleet Command emblem:

In canon we have seen the crews of two pre-TOS, prime universe, starships use the Delta.
The USS Franklin and the USS Kelvin:

^ Like it or not the above is canon ;)

In the TOS era we see that some of the Constitution class ships and a few starbases had begun to use their own unique insignias. However as far as starships go perhaps only the Constitution class crews were allowed to diversify their insignia, the rest of the fleet may have used the Delta. The Enterprise is the flag ship therefore they may have chosen to use the Delta in solidarity with the rest of the fleet. It should also be noted that the UESPA was the primary operating authority of the five year mission which the Enterprise undertook, as Kirk explained to John Christopher in the episode "Tomorrow is Yesterday". Therefore we should not be surprised that the Enterprise uses the UESPA exploration Delta during its five year mission.

Having said all that, Discovery is set at least ten years before TOS so perhaps all ships at that time, including the Constitution class ships, all used the Delta. It is only by the time we reach TOS era, a decade later, that some ships have begun to diversify their insignia's. However, this was only temporary as in TAS all ships had begun to use the Delta once more.

Granted, the new command logo does include the MACO five-pointed star (that is what Memory Alpha calls it!), just like the Enterprise crew wears. However the Command/MACO star is not unique to the Enterprise either.

I know people think that using the Delta in Discovery is lazy writing or something, but based on canon I cannot see any logical reason why they should not use it.

Just from a franchise branding POV, it'd be a bit silly to use anything other than the delta since it's so synonymous with the show. Granted 'Enterprise' tried it (and initially even dropped 'Star Trek') but that's hardly an example to emulate.

For my own personal head canon, I've always interpreted those different logos from TOS to each represent a different fleet, with the symbol deriving from one of the pre-Federation agencies that were amalgamated into Starfleet. The classic delta being the UESPA/Earth Starfleet symbol, and the others representing the equivilent Vulcan, Andorian, Telleraite etc. agencies.
Mostly because I prefer to think that the evolution of the Federation and Starfleet was a gradual thing that took some time before they became these monolithic organisations.
