I've been fond of this design for years, but I must say that having the engines just attach on the same plane as the secondary hull, as we've seen in the "Discovery" reveal, has grown on me. It's just different enough to be interesting.
I'd like a cross between thIs: http://lordsarvain.deviantart.com/art/Edward-Teller-Rebuild-Update-I-596537369 And the Discovery promo ship
Looks fine to me. The color in the promo gave me pause, but I will reserve final judgment until we see the actual design.
I must say: I'm kinda hoping the USS Discovery doesn't change much in terms of its silhouette (from what was shown). Obviously an improved render / model of the starship itself, but overall, I'm hoping what was seen so far, is in essence what we get.
Nah, lots of things can change in five months of preproduction. Jefferies' Enterprise changed massively.
Too late... I've long-since started imagining diecast models, and electronic starship replica versions of the USS Discovery... so my virtual mind-palace replete with Trek ship collection is pretty much locked in with the promo version of the Discovery! If the ship design changes now, my mind palace will be downgraded to more of a dilapidated abandoned mind-basement! Edit: I jest. Would love it if the Discovery design stays the same, but my world won't crumble if it isn't.
Yes it changed a lot during the concept stage but not once it was "revealed" to the world (bar a few extra windows and slight modifications to the nacelles, deflector and bridge)
It wasn't revealed until TOS was in production. The earliest published sketches of Picard's ship featured a wholly different design for the saucer separation.
Wasn't even a saucer separation, more like a smaller arc shaped ship embedded in the saucer top... Apparently CBS has moved the premier date again, from May to an uncertain time later.
So I've read the whole thread, and it's clear that some hate the design, some like it, some are more cautious, etc etc. I think it's a bit pointless to make an assessment based on personal taste, because it's normal that some will like it and some won't. Let me make some points, in the hope that they can help the discussion: The design is sturdy and very simple making the ship to some simplistic, to some instantly recognizable. I personally think that something does not necessarily have to be beautiful in a modern contemporary meaning to be liked. Many car designs from the 70's and 80's would be rejected nowadays, and most would consider them ugly. The design reflects the taste and style of the 70's, many things have changed since then, especially because we now tend to have shapes that are very streamlined and sleek; so we automatically tend to dislike straight lines, cubical shapes. Since the TOS Enterprise was designed in the 60's, and Discovery is supposed to take place a decade before TOS, it would probably make more sense to use a 50's design, rather than a 70's design. Another issue is given by the fact that the ENT's Enterprise, which should have had a design 100 years before Kirk's time looks contemporary, messing the logical design timeline we make up in our minds (which retraces our world's history of design). I personally don't dislike the design, she's not a pretty sight per se, but we all can fall in love with an ugly thing, can't we?
