Sonequa Martin-Green is Your DSC Star

She's staying on TWD too according to Variety.

Is that feasible? IIRC, Discovery is being filmed in Toronto but TWD is in Georgia. Is she going to be available to regularly make that kind of a commute?

They have to say she's staying on it, otherwise they'd be spoiling the show and AMC would be pissed. Doesn't mean she will stay on it anymore than Cumberbatch wasn't playing Khan or Fuller is still heavily involved in the show.

I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, Sonequa Martin-Green is awesome on Walking Dead, so on that I'm thrilled for her to be the lead on Discovery. On the other, I'm bummed this likely means Sasha will be leaving Walking Dead.

Honestly, at this point you can easily say any Walking Dead character is going to be killed off and it won't surprise anyone. Unless they killed off Rick or Daryl, that is.

Does this mean zombies vs the Federation???

If STDisc is 13 episodes and WD is 16, both might be doable for a non-sleeping actor. How big is she on WD?

She was part of the least popular arc on OuaT in the back half of season 2 so you probably just blocked it out.

Ha, was just reading up on her character and you're right.

Her character and Greg were to OUaT what Nikki and Paulo were to Lost. I think I cheered when Gold killed her.

Sure, it's possible, but...

TWD is the biggest show on TV.

Discovery is one of the most expensive TV shows ever produced and that's assuming no budget overruns, and it is also launching a new TV service in the US.

Both shows are the flagship of their respective "networks" (AMC and CBS go).

Both shows are filmed in different countries.

I sincerely doubt either production company / network would be willing to risk screwing up their flagship shows to allow one actor be able to film a rival production in another country. Especially after Fuller was just termed for wanting to delay Discovery's production.

Were not talking about, say, Kristen Kreuk filming a little Canadian show and Smallville on the CW at the same time in the same city. Or even Jim Beaver filming on Supernatural and Justified at the same time, where his character would conveniently disappear from Supernatural when he had a run on Justified.

These are two of the biggest shows being made today and she's the main character in one and a main character in the other.

I expect she's dead in TWD finale.

Great choice! I don't care one bit about the ethnicity or sex, and I think focusing on those aspects unfairly diminishes her accomplishment. She earned this gig because she's really good.

I don't love her WD character, but she's a very talented actress. She nails the part as it's written, and she'll be an intriguing lead for DSC. Smart pick!

She can do both full time. Typically 1 episode =~ 1 week of production time.

TWD has an incredibly large cast. There are many episodes focusing on one main cast where most of the crew don't even appear. They would probably have to work something out.

You could shoot a sitcom half-hour in a week, but a 1 hour drama is typically 8 shooting days. If you have to really stretch a budget, you could do it in 7... I believe I heard that TNG and DS9 had 7 day shooting schedules, which impressed me. Pulling that off consistently could not have been easy. (And it wouldn't surprise me if TWD had more than 8 days, given how many extra-long episodes they produce now)

I would be shocked if she's not killed off of TWD sometime in the back half of the current season -- UNLESS Discovery is a one year deal for her, and it's a Ned Stark plan, where they know her character definitely would not continue to a second season.

But it's more likely she's off TWD. You pay series regular money precisely so that you can hold your actors and keep them available to you whenever you want them. There would be no incentive for AMC to allow her to do this if she's still under contract with TWD, it would only create headaches and logistical problems on their end.

And even if the season 1 shoot for Discovery fits within the TWD hiatus this year, CBS would not sign her as the lead unless she was free and clear for whenever they decide they want to shoot possible future seasons.

I'm really happy about this announcement, she's a great actress. I wonder if these 7 complete the cast, or if there are more announcements still to come...

Well, this is was a surprise. I was kind of expecting that they would go with more of an unknown. I love Sasha on Walking Dead, so it's nice that she's becoming a part of Star Trek. She racking up a nice genre resume, too.

Since Walking Dead has only 16 episodes to a season and Discovery has only 13, there's probably no reason that she can't do both shows-- but she's already survived a long time in the Zombie Apocalypse, so her days were probably numbered anyway.

In truth, most main actors only seem to appear in 5-6 episode per year of TWD now (or at least it feels like that!), so if she is doing both shows, it's probably pretty easy to schedule. I personally think this announcement means she's a goner from Rick Grimes' gang though.

Her role on TWD isn't all that big these days which means... I have no idea, could go either way, either Sasha is a goner or she just stays more in the background like she did this season so far.
