Next thing you know they'll have Sulu be the captain of a ship called Intrepid.....
Maybe, juuuust maybe, there are still nations on Earth. United, yes, but they still exist. And maybe, just maybe, the Chinese base for Starfleet (you know, since I doubt the entirity of Starfleet is located in San Francisco) were responsible for building and/or naming the ship and maybe, just maybe, the Chinese base for Starfleet decided to put one of their own in the ship. What is it with Starfleet? We've got a ship with a Chinese name, better make a Chinese woman captain!
Seriously, wtf? That's not how it should work.
Yes, and don't forget Captain Varley of the USS Yamato. Don't let his name fool you, he was clearly Japanese!!
Yeah, but think of it this way. Every Asian character in Star Trek has pretty much been really Asian-American. Even exotic-sounding Hoshi Sato was yet just another Yank
If Han Bo is supposed to be authentically Chinese, then having her ship be called the Shenzhou is more of an honor than a slap. And I agree with Christopher; I've always hated that Starfleet ships mostly seem to have American names when we're supposed to be running an interstellar organization here.
The first thought I had though was are they trying to appeal to the Chinese market? That might have more and more of an impact on shows/movies going forward.
Yes HORRIBLE isn't it - I mean TOS was all talk, no action...oh, wait...Isn't she mostly known for action? I hope this isn't a sign that DSC is going to have a bunch of action in it.
Never stopped them before. They'll have pirated copies of the series available probably even before we get to see it.Will China even get DIS anytime soon? The last I heard, there were no information yet about a distribution there.

Why would it be silly? In the ST universe humans live way pass 100, so a 50 year old cadet would be no big deal for a human, if you're a Vulcan or any other long lived species, being 50 is like being a 20 year old human.
Isn't she mostly known for action? I hope this isn't a sign that DSC is going to have a bunch of action in it.
I though Starfleet ships with all-Vulcan crews was what we were discussing, and that Nyotarules was referring to the USS T'Kumbra from DS9?The Intrepid wasn't a Vulcan ship. It was a Starfleet ship crewed by Vulcans.
It's very condescending, but it's what passes for progressive in this phase.I wonder sometimes if it doesn't sort of set up a "separate but equal" situation while trying to be inclusive and culturally appropriate.
Your agonizer, please.Prehaps her rank will be Yeohman!
Your agonizer, please.or a Barkley?
I reckon they should cast Jason Statham as the ships doctor and get it done with. I mean, by giving someone who is known to be able to give a good high kick a leading part must signal that the show will be all fisticuffs.Isn't she mostly known for action? I hope this isn't a sign that DSC is going to have a bunch of action in it.
Well considering the show was always originally designed as an action-adventure I certainly hope so.Isn't she mostly known for action? I hope this isn't a sign that DSC is going to have a bunch of action in it.
Firstly the actress is Malaysian. We don't know for sure what Asian country she represents..and in any case that matters a lot less in the 22nd century than it does now. There is likely no relationship to the naming of the ship and the casting of the actress, though I have a feeling if Yeoh were Chinese she would probably like it. If indeed this is a "Chinese" starship, it would be very odd after the formation of the UFP.What is it with Starfleet? We've got a ship with a Chinese name, better make a Chinese woman captain!

I wish I could like this multiple times.I reckon they should cast Jason Statham as the ships doctor and get it done with. I mean, by giving someone who is known to be able to give a good high kick a leading part must signal that the show will be all fisticuffs.
So why not cast everyone that way. Statham can do a flying kick whenever some crewperson comes in with the sniffles, Dwayne Johnson can bodyslam anyone that comes to him for Shore Leave in his role as the the Klingon Commander, Chuck Norris can punch through the viewscreen to reprimand the Captain when he/she refuses to follow direct orders from him as a Starfleet Admiral...
Yeoh was pretty great as Aung San Su Kyi in The Lady, as Mahema in Memoirs of a Geisha and Mrs Wang in The Children of Huang Shi. Like many Chinese-action stars, she has been sadly pigeonholed because of her physical ability, but she also commands a lot of dramatic grace in her performances that get overlooked.
I'm very happy with this piece of casting and if it is successful I hope is opens up more acting opportunities for her given one casting agent and producer has clearly seen more in her than most.
Hugo - Fighters have rules, too. Friendship, trust, integrity. Always keep your promise. Without rules we wouldn't survive long.
What if she commanded the team that developed or upgraded the starship (like Sisko with the Defiant) and was given the right to name her ship out of respect for her contribution, and that's what she chose? In the novels the captains are given leeway to choose the names of their shuttlecraft (Riker names his after jazz musicians, for instance), and while this is a much bugger deal than that, if it was someone who heralded a specific starship program long term or from its infancy like Archer or Sisko did, maybe they would be given greater input into its naming? What is it with Starfleet?
