Michelle Yeoh will feature in Discovery, possibly as lead

What is it with Starfleet? We've got a ship with a Chinese name, better make a Chinese woman captain!

Seriously, wtf? That's not how it should work.
Maybe, juuuust maybe, there are still nations on Earth. United, yes, but they still exist. And maybe, just maybe, the Chinese base for Starfleet (you know, since I doubt the entirity of Starfleet is located in San Francisco) were responsible for building and/or naming the ship and maybe, just maybe, the Chinese base for Starfleet decided to put one of their own in the ship.

You know, just like how others eluded to with Kirk and the Enterprise. I mean, why wasn't the NCC-1701 named the U.S.S. Mandela or the U.S.S. Rozhkov? <rantly spits on the ground in mocked disgust and feigned, indignant anger>

Yeah, but think of it this way. Every Asian character in Star Trek has pretty much been really Asian-American. Even exotic-sounding Hoshi Sato was yet just another Yank ;)

If Han Bo is supposed to be authentically Chinese, then having her ship be called the Shenzhou is more of an honor than a slap. And I agree with Christopher; I've always hated that Starfleet ships mostly seem to have American names when we're supposed to be running an interstellar organization here.

To be fair, I think us brits had the enterprise first. Though it is a bit dodgy. Under current world politics and media sales we won't hear of the USS Tianamen again.

Isn't she mostly known for action? I hope this isn't a sign that DSC is going to have a bunch of action in it.

Why would it be silly? In the ST universe humans live way pass 100, so a 50 year old cadet would be no big deal for a human, if you're a Vulcan or any other long lived species, being 50 is like being a 20 year old human.

Don't worry, I'm sure that she can stand and declaim mind-numbing and pointless soliloquies about "what it means to be human" as well as anyone.

I reckon they should cast Jason Statham as the ships doctor and get it done with. I mean, by giving someone who is known to be able to give a good high kick a leading part must signal that the show will be all fisticuffs.

So why not cast everyone that way. Statham can do a flying kick whenever some crewperson comes in with the sniffles, Dwayne Johnson can bodyslam anyone that comes to him for Shore Leave in his role as the the Klingon Commander, Chuck Norris can punch through the viewscreen to reprimand the Captain when he/she refuses to follow direct orders from him as a Starfleet Admiral...

Yeoh was pretty great as Aung San Su Kyi in The Lady, as Mahema in Memoirs of a Geisha and Mrs Wang in The Children of Huang Shi. Like many Chinese-action stars, she has been sadly pigeonholed because of her physical ability, but she also commands a lot of dramatic grace in her performances that get overlooked.

I'm very happy with this piece of casting and if it is successful I hope is opens up more acting opportunities for her given one casting agent and producer has clearly seen more in her than most.

Firstly the actress is Malaysian. We don't know for sure what Asian country she represents..and in any case that matters a lot less in the 22nd century than it does now. There is likely no relationship to the naming of the ship and the casting of the actress, though I have a feeling if Yeoh were Chinese she would probably like it. If indeed this is a "Chinese" starship, it would be very odd after the formation of the UFP.

She is Chinese-Malaysian, so both. Both her parents were (at least Ethnically) Hokkien Chinese.

Though (probably because its a personal thing) wikipedia doesn't really say what she identified as. But considering she was raised in Malaysia, i'd probably say that? Who knows.

I wish I could like this multiple times.

Whining that a show will be flawed because your perception of ONE actor on the show is flawed and incomplete is such a Trekkie thing to do... and it is ridiculous in the extreme.

What if she commanded the team that developed or upgraded the starship (like Sisko with the Defiant) and was given the right to name her ship out of respect for her contribution, and that's what she chose? In the novels the captains are given leeway to choose the names of their shuttlecraft (Riker names his after jazz musicians, for instance), and while this is a much bugger deal than that, if it was someone who heralded a specific starship program long term or from its infancy like Archer or Sisko did, maybe they would be given greater input into its naming?

What if she requested assignment aboard an already named ship in part because one of her ancestors was a taikonaut who flew aboard a Shenzhou flight, and so the history of that appealed to her? Or just the Chinese name itself seemed fitting for her captaincy?

What if there are lots of Chinese-named ships in the fleet and there's no great coincidence or purpose behind her receiving that assignment at all? It's no different from Kirk, Archer, Harriman, and Garret commanding the Enterprise, Janeway commanding Voyager, Sisko commanding the Defiant, or any number of English-named captains commanding English-named ships..

Also, people seem to be assuming that she's commanding a Starfleet ship, but I don't see that anywhere in the article the person posted in this thread. Is it somewhere else? The ship could just as easily be a civilian or renegade vessel which she named herself that plays a significant role in the first season, either as an ally or adversary (or an adversary that becomes an ally as the truth unfolds, or vice versa) of the Lt. Cmdr. and the Discovery crew. Or the ship could be a mystery for them to solve. What happened to the Shenzhou could be the plot of the season, for instance, with flashbacks to Captain Han Bo's perspective of what happened as the season goes along. There are any number of possibilities other than just another conventional Starfleet ship.

Whatever the explanation is, instead of nitpicking without even knowing the full story yet, shouldn't we be pleased that they've at least somewhat broken out of the habit of making prominent ships in the show primarily follow English naming schemes? It fits with the show's stated dedication to greater diversity.
