Does anyone think that Beyond was something of a missed opportunity?

Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed the movie for what it was. It was a nice way to honor Trek's 50th anniversary. It was not a bad movie whatsoever. And it was leagues better than Into Darkness!

However, I can't help but feel that it could've been so much more. We got nothing that explored the potential of the awesome possibilities of an alternate timeline. I thought the whole point of Star Trek 2009 was to take the franchise into new directions with stuff we've never seen before! Star Trek 2009 was very promising. But what have we seen since then? A rehash of TWOK and then a story with another forgettable villain who wants revenge against the Federation. Beyond just seemed like stuff we've all seen before. It was good, but none of it felt substantial.

Anyone feel the same?

I think Paramount screwed themselves when they decided not to follow the threads set up in Into Darkness. Genetically engineered supermen, war with the Klingons were things that could've gotten folks into the theater.

Beyond
is a solid movie, but it didn't really feel like it affected the universe at large, nor was part of any larger story. Which you need in the age of continuing storylines.

That idea sounds inspired and a lot better than what we got.
I always thought Klingons should appear in Star Trek 3. The audience greatly enjoyed their presence in STID. To be honest, I expected more space battles, planetary exploration. A Klingon captain extremely intelligent, malicious, the perfect enemy for Captain Kirk.

Beyond was a collection of Trek clichés entertainingly presented. It was a greatest hits collection. It was "safe". If the Kelvinverse wants to survive and thrive it needs to do something new and not merely repeat successes from the past.

New is scary. New can fail. But this stagnation in film Trekkies will kill the series as surely as something experimental.

I wanted that for STID. IMO, it would have made for a much better villain than Khan, especially since most of the recent Trek movie villains have been variations on Khan anyway.

I'd have liked to see more status quo changes in Into Darkness and Beyond. ID brought along Carol Marcus for the five-year mission then she's presumably left the ship or is unseen below decks for Beyond.

As much as I LOVE the Enterprise-A sequence at the end of STB, I was kinda hoping they'd fix up the Franklin and lead a much smaller ragtag crew on future missions. Then bring out the Enterprise-A in a movie or two.

I need to see it another time to see if my thoughts change but overall I thought it was worst of the JJ movies, not really moving the story forward. In that sense yeah I do feel it's a missed opportunity when I compare it to what I was hoping for after Into Darkness, which was exploring strange new worlds, with emphasis on new.

And the best thing is that they wouldn't even need to come up with a contrieved explanation for his motivation ... Klingons are the bad guys, and that's it!

On the other hand, I didn't like how the Klingons looked like in STID ... so I'm glad that we didn't see any of them in Beyond.

I liked Beyond but personally I felt it was very lackluster being the movie marking the 50th anniversary. I think it matched the tone of the Original show better than the previous two films which is the reason I liked it. It just feels like they should have gone for something bigger for this outing. I would have liked something that connected to the franchise as a whole.

I think I like Beyond more than I would under normal circumstances because Into Darkness set the bar so low. I loved Beyond when I walked out, I was so surprised how good it was after ST 2009 and Into Darkness. It still doesn't hold a candle to the likes of Wrath of Khan, Search for Spock, or Voyager Home.

It was a safe film, but it was great for what it was and probably the sensible option for the 50th anniversary.

I'd have loved to have seen a follow-up to Into Darkness in both plot and tone (it had a few flaws, but I found it ambitious and interesting), but I understand and appreciate what they did.

Can definitely understand why it felt a bit flat to some critics and viewers, though.

Oh, and I don't agree at all with the assertion that ID was a "rehash" of TWoK.
