Discovery itself

Just messing around with the look of the Discovery. Too much sketch time on hand today.

Figured I'd add another profile view and some color for funz

I'm surprised there hasn't been any discussion about what the interior might look like based on the exterior - am hoping for a cross between the TOS Bridge, and Voyagers.

For me the exterior design of Discovery has really grown on me, the profile is instantly recognisable to me. If instant recognisability is the aim then to me I think it has succeeded.

I hope that whatever changes they do to the design don't alter the overall profile, and the changes make good sense.

I've seen that spacedock seen in ST III more times than I care to admit, however I've always been looking at Excelsior and have never noticed the ship to the left of Enterprise! I think Discovery is ugly, but the fact that a similar design may have been on screen before is interesting. Personally I'd rather see a Daedalus class, NX-01 refit, a Hermes/Saladin single nacelle ship, or even an Antares. If Discovery is going to look like they have shown so far, there had better be good reason for the ugly design (garbage scow?).

Based on the exterior, I am expecting something more a cross between early TNG and ENT. Earth tones, moody lighting (and low ceilings?), a utilitarian/techy vibe with a dash of retro flavour.

I know it won't happen, but if they go for the Ralph McQuarrie Planet of the Titans Enterprise interior, I will be the happiest Trekkie in the world:

USS Discovery Full Breakdown:

In this episode of Trekyards it is revealed that the designers of the USS Discovery put a lot more thought into designing the ship then most people think.
Samuel and I break down the early Discovery design to show you all the direct tie ins to other Starfleet vessels. Some amazing renders done by Samuel with a 3D model made by the very talented Barry Chapman make this a very special episode. Comparison shots to the other Starfleet designs we all know and love, really put this ship into perspective. So....whether you love the design, or hate it, we think there is something for everyone in today's Trekyards.

Really have to disagree with their approach on this one, yes some items do resemble bits featured on other ships across a ~100 year timeframe but you can't take bits on isolation of their original design and throw them together. You get the space ship equivalent of Homers car. Yes it has bits that work on other models but the whole is a disaster. They completely skip that having a round saucer on a triangle base it's a crime against aesthetics and that the row of engines on the bottom make it look like it would spin in loops if the power ever got put down. Thankfully it was briefly mentioned that the rectangle nac's on top of a triangle hull do look stupid from above but that was kind of it.

I wonder if they have now got too close to the 'inside' and are being biased by the desire to keep their designer and in-scene friends happy.

They claim their insider says the size is "about right", but I thought Discovery looked much larger. Then again, window sizes are pretty much all we have to go on, and they can vary quite a bit.

Well to be fair as it's a trek ship we can expect several different sizes none of which will match up with the interior!
The interior will be all on one level, with ceilings so low that everyone will have to walk around hunched over. ;)

It just always reminded me of a garden shovel with warp nacelles. I did like the Nova-class, it was pretty slick.
I think I just shed a tear from laughter. This is my favorite comparison because truthfully I didn't like her at first. I can appreciate your creative reason for disliking it. haha. garden shovel.
