Spoilers IDW Star Trek - New Visions - John Byrne

REVIEW: "Swarm"
This "episode" was interesting. Byrne made good use of all seven main characters, but especially good use of McCoy and Scotty. This "bottle" show's focus was primarily on Spock and McCoy, and their connection to the antagonists in the story.
The antagonists were really not "heavies"; they had a mission, just like the Enterprise. The mystery surrounds what kind of mission, and what was their objective?
Once again, JB knows the "voices" of the performers. You can literally "hear" the actors' voices in your head as you read the dialog. Great fun!
Visually, the alien vessels, while nondescript, were wholly original. The "supernova" visuals were superb, and something that would've been impossible on TOS' budget in the '60's.
It was fun to see the hangar deck, and characters walking around in it; enjoyed seeing JB's rendering of Engineering put to good use. I noticed some Bridge scenes also took advantage of JB's Bridge background render, but they were subtle enough that unless you were looking for them you wouldn't notice.
The McCoy-Spock banter, as usual, sparkled. Even Scotty got a few zingers: "knickers in a twist". Again, JB got the "performances" spot on.
Overall, "Swarm" was a solid effort, with some interesting insight into the nature of other "species".
Recommended.

Can you guess which episode this manipulated screen shot is from originally?

Weren't we expecting the Humble Bundle issue in September? Anyone get their's yet?

I would've guessed "Journey to Babel," but Kirk was in the wraparound tunic in that one.
Well, don't forget that Byrne sometimes composes his panels by inserting in figures from elsewhere. So there could be two Kirk bodies in that panel.

Was the Gorn story only going to be available in the Humble Bundle, or was it going to appear elsewhere, like a trade paperback?

Oops, my bad. Got my titles mixed up.

I can't imagine they'll never release it, either as a regular issue or (at the very least) as part of a future trade paperback.

 Wow it's only an 8 page issue? That's dissapointing. Probably would have made some people think twice about letting that perk effect the size of their donation.

For those new to NEW VISIONS, that eight pager is a true bonus. For myself, who has collected all the individual issues since "Strange New Worlds" the 2013 Annual, it is a bit annoying.
I understand Humble Bundle is for a fine cause, however I am not interested in duplicates of the stories I already have. So if I miss JB's Gorn story, ... well, so be it.
I made my feelings known to Mr. Byrne on his Forum about it, and was "suspended" for that.
Ah well.

Except Byrne's New Visions stories are a lot more densely packed than most modern, decompressed comics, with a lot more panels and words per page. So an 8-page story in NV could have about as much content as a 22-page story of another modern comic.

I don't disagree.
However, by pointing out to Mr. Byrne on his forum that the new "eight-pager" was of more value than his 50th anniversary adaptation of "The Cage" (which was well done, by the way) apparently irked him.

That's pretty typical of how Byrne runs things at his Forum, sadly.

MCCOY: Spock, isn't it enough the commodore is famous for his hospitality? I, for one, could use a good non-reconstituted meal.
SPOCK: Doctor, you are a sensualist.
MCCOY: You bet your pointed ears I am.

When on Mr. Byrne's Forum I pointed out that this scene and dialog was one of my favorites, he pointed out the "racism of Dr. McCoy". I argued that only McCoy, having worked with Spock long enough could get away with that line; Scotty, Sulu, Uhura, et al wouldn't dare try it.
Mr. Byrne disagreed strongly. In NEW VISIONS he has omitted those type of lines, removing some of the "charm", in my opinion, of McCoy's character.
I don't believe Dr. McCoy is a racist at all. He just enjoys his verbal sparring with Spock and Spock "tolerates" it a deference to the captain and McCoy's friendship.

Some NEW VISIONS detractors had been complaining about the stories being too "wordy". I feel that that is unjustified; TOS was always heavy-dialog/character driven. Expository dialog was always part and parcel of Star Trek.
In "Swarm", Spock has quite a bit of exposition; I don't think it detracts from the story one bit.
But there will always be complainers, I suppose.
