Spoilers IDW Star Trek - New Visions - John Byrne

At first I disliked "New Visions." However, it has grown on me, as it subverts our preconceived notions about professionally-produced art. And on principle, I like things that subvert our preconceived notions and expectations.

"I like things that subvert our preconceived notions and expectations."
That's a cool quote. Like it!
Byrne has to work within restrictions: established screenshots of the main characters, and certain "guest stars" whose likenesses are on the approved list from CBS/Paramount (he has said he could do a whole story featuring Mr. Leslie because there are enough "shots", but Eddie Paskey is not "approved"). He has hired "friends" (cheap! he says) to fill out his "guest stars" for some stories, or created new aliens.
He won't use any images from season three unless absolutely necessary because of hairstyle changes, and differences in costume; not a fan of that final year, I guess.
But, creativity thrives on restrictions; TOS certainly did.

I agree; but he'd had that adaptation in the planning stages for a year to hit during the 50th.
September's issue "Swarm" is an original. Last I checked his Forum, he had up to the seventeenth story in production, provided IDW continues with the title. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Didn't Byrne float a 'The Three Captains' special with Pike, Kirk and Movie-era Kirk?

First impressions of JB's adaptation of "The Cage":

Overall, a solid effort. Having seen the episode dozens of times, I could see where some "editing" to dialogue and sequences occurred. But it didn't interrupt the narrative flow.

An interesting use of photo-manipulation in the Pike/Boyce sequence in the captain's cabin; character body angles were "flipped" to make the dialogue balloons flow better.

The transitions between Pike's "environments" while under the Talosians' control was not as fluid as the filmed episode, but tolerable.

In order to get the entire story in at fifty pages, some close-ups received the "Byrne" framing (i.e., widescreen with the character's face centered, surrounded by dialogue balloons, but cropping hairline and chins); not a fan of that, but understandable.

My copy suffered from a big goof on the cover: Gene ROBBENBERRY. ROBBENBERRY?!?
Really? JB must be having a fit on that one. Oh well, a fine tip black Sharpie fixed it easily.

It's nice to have a part of the NEW VISIONS series, and honors the 50th, but I'll be more excited over September's new story "Swarm!"

Recommended for completists.

I don't think that was done for pacing reasons, but more for visual variety's sake. All closeups being framed in the exact same way is a LOT more monotonous in a comic book than it is with a moving image.

Heh. I hadn't noticed that. I wonder if that was Byrne's mistake or the fault of someone at IDW. I've noticed from lurking on Byrne's Forum that he's no stranger to typos and misspellings.

Oh dear, it's correct in the second credit, below the big one, and inside. But yeah, oh dear...

That's the last time Captain Pike recommends his proofreader.

Well, since he's very clearly robbing all the Vinas at gunpoint, I really don't see the problem, here. ;)

I met Byrne at the Star Trek: Mission New York con this weekend, and I asked him if he could give any teasers for upcoming issues. He said that Sam Kirk will be making an appearance in an upcoming issue.

Yes. Byrne was experimenting with "de-aging" some 1st season Kirk headshots; a flashback story with his older brother makes sense now.
The "de-aged" headshots could be young Jim; photo-manipulated headshots from, say, season three, could represent the "older, beef-ier" Sam Kirk.
Interesting.

This is what JB was playing with back in March. Pretty impressive.

I bet you're right! :techman:
