I don't think it's related to Asimov at all. Many people think of it as "High Noon" in space. Hyams is on record as wanting to do a Western, but had to set it in space to get it made.

I just found it odd that you assigned Star Trek the "science fiction" as if it was separate thing. Trek plays in the Space Opera sub-genre too.
You obviously (a) didn't bother to read about DC's Vartox and of course (b) missed the joke completely.Nope. It was an original script by Peter Hyams. Alan Dean Foster did write the novelization though.

Well, it looks like a satire of some kind but other than the character looking like Sean Connery, I didn't see any resemblance with the story. What is the joke that I missed?
That's all there is. The character's appearance is based on that of Connery in the film.

I wouldn't characterize Star Trek as space opera. It doesn't rely much on futuristic swashbuckling. For me Star Trek is soft science fiction as it uses it's sci-fi elements to explore sociological issues. Nothing is set on stone though, that's just my interpretation of the subgenres. Feel free to make your own.
It's not pure Space Opera on the level of Star Wars, but it dips in on occasion. The films more so than the TV shows. Part of the beauty of Star Trek, especially TOS, is that it's comfortable in many SF sub-genres. It doesn't have to be just one.
That's true. With different planets, cultures, timelines, galaxies, dimensions, time traveling, holodeck adventures, and about 726 episodes and 13 movies Star Trek has done it all! Which of course leads us to the original question. What do we prefer, space opera, science fantasy, soft science fiction, hard science fiction? And what should Discovery be/have?
I like them all. So what ever it is, I'll be happy. I suspect, since we're looking at a arc based season, there will be a single "tone". The next season might be different,
Zardoz wasn't the name of Sean Connery in the film. It was a contraction of Wizard Of Oz and the name of the big floating stone head that went around collecting goods for the immortals.
Sean Connery's name in the film is Zed. Zardoz comes from the phrase the "Wizard of Oz". DC's Vartox is named after "The Vortex" where the immortal Eternals (from Zardoz) live.
I consider Zardoz (1974) to be a post-apocalyptic science fantasy film.
Agreed. The 13 episode arc (based on "Balance of Terror") probably won't allow for many '30s Gangster or Wild West episodes!

It is. The parody you were talking about mixed the name of Sean Connery's character and that of the giant head. And that was the link you were talking about. I made you aware that that link was even flimsier than it seemed.
All I mentioned was his appearance. Said nothing about the name. So no connection between what I said and your response.
