Revisiting Space: 1999...

Shows were usually renewed year by year in the UK so a "series" just meant all the episodes produced in a given year's run. The term "season" only entered common usage when US shows became more widely available on DVD.

ETA: Doctor Who still has series not seasons in the UK so we still don't conform.

There was a second season Ep (Return to where?) where the Alphans are contacted by Earth several centuries after the events of Breakaway (time dilation it's thing you know and the devastation of Earth is expanded upon.

Gerry Anderson's shows weren't renown for being scientifically very accurate. However, they were entertaining, usually. He did make one drama documentary (The Day After Tomorrow) -- it also was pretty fanciful scientifically and not very entertaining.

This was intended a child-friendly introduction to Albert Einstein's special relativity theory in the form of an exciting action-adventure.

I remember when, during an interview, Johnny Byrne (one of the writers of Space 1999) explained how he had to learn the basics of the theory of relativity to work on this project and how he was especially fascinated by the concept of time dilation. He knew nothing about it.

The problem is that he already worked on Space: 1999 and the concept of Time Dilation is like Sci-Fi 101. And he knew nothing about it.

Ignoring scientific accuracy for the the sake of story telling is one thing, not knowing the science's basics is another.

Bain could project and emote, but you just don't see it in S1999.

Maybe she was bored or something and trying to get herself thrown off the show?

Candidly, though, I wasn't impressed with acting in general in the show which was a surprise given performers like Landau and Morse. Maybe it was the direction given throughout much of the series. The general calibre of performances was nowhere as good as Star Trek or UFO.

Watch 2001. The flat anti-dramatic delivery seems to have been a deliberate attempt to copy that.

Even if I hadn't met Dullea last week I'd resent this comparison.

I believe that the blinks were added in post-prduction.

Almost tempted to go back and see check the numbers count.

Add the end of Breakaway it's said there were 311 men and women on Alpha.

At the start of the Metamporth there are 297 which so 14 lives lives were lost in the first 11 and a bit months but I think the number was a bit higher.

There was also a first season episode where they were 'split' and one branch returned to Earth and found it had been devastated and the only somewhat habitable location was in the former Santa Barbara, California area. Of course by the end of the episode the moon and it's occupants are r-merged; and the aspect with them returning to Earth is somehow forgotten as I recall.
