50 Days of Voyager

Day 11 – Basics Part 1 (and 2x16 Meld)

So I started Basics Part 1 but realized I was missing something with the officer confined to his quarters. Did a quick internet search and realized this was a result of things that happened in Meld. SO I watched Meld (which was a solid episode) and then continued with Basics.

The premise was a little thin (Janeway risking the entire Voyager ship for Chaqotais baby which was created from his stolen DNA….), but I got past that pretty quick. There was a lot of great action and it ended on great cliffhanger to the episode. Also that crazy Seska was back causing chaos!

Overall I enjoyed watching this abridged version of Seasons 1 and 2. The second season is generally regarded as the worst Voyager season but I found the good episodes to be quiet good. I believe the main problem is there are not many good ones! The abridged version I would recommend is:

Season 1
1x01 Caretaker Part 1
1x02 Caretaker Part 2
1x03 Parallax
1x05 Phage
1x07 Eye of the Needle
1x11 State of Flux

Season 2
2x03 Projections
2x10 Cold Fire
2x11 Maneuvers
2x16 Meld
2x21 Deadlock
2x24 Tuvix
2x26 Basics 1

Now, I am getting excited to be heading into Season 3! Tommorow I will watch 3x01 Basics 2.
I would say the first two seasons are the worst but as you go along they get much better. I would highly recommend skipping less episodes through the later seasons

Day 12 – Basics Part 2

Chaqotai, you are not the baby’s daddy! Sounds like hum and Seska could be on Maury Pauvich.J This was a decent conclusion to the two parter. It will not win any Emmy awards but it had some good action and was entertaining. The only thing that bothered me was the original mission was to get Chaqotai`s son. This was not accomplished as it turned out he did not have a son. So basically all the death and hardship was pointless (must be good for crew morale). If you overlook that fact (which you have to) this was a good episode.

Travelling deeper into season 3 tomorrow when I will watch 3x08 Futures End 1.

Day 13 – Futures End 1

Ok, I cannot stop laughing at Tuvok in his earth getup. He looks hilarious. What can you say about this episode? The plot is thin and pretty much a copy of an old Star trek movie. If you use too much critical thinking you will get fixated on the plot holes so just sit back and enjoy the fun of it.

Tomorrow the second half with 3x09 Futures End 2.

Day 14 – Futures End 2

And now the conclusion…well that was a piece of crap. They never explained what voyager did to stop the explosion. I guess It just didn’t happen this. Also I am really not buying into doc on earth, apparently the writers thought that would be "cool". And Tom Paris should never yell out anything. His "Watch out!" and "Jump!" sounded comical. Overall this two parter was dated and completely skippable.

Speeding through season 3 with 3x17 Unity on que.

Day 15 – Unity

Borg baby! A pretty decent episode. I have noticed a substantial increase in production value from season 3 compared to season 2. Overall it was a nice episode of voyager with some cool ideas.

Tomorrow I will be watching 3x21 Before and After.

Day 16 – Before and After

Holy crap! Where did that come from! What a great episode. Kes is definitely one of the best characters in the first 3 seasons. She is one of the few characters who can actually carry an episode on her own and the idea of her character (9 years life span, mental powers) is original for a main character on a Star Trek series. I have read that she gets replaced by 7 of 9. After watching this episode and comparing it to some of the other characters, especially Harry Kim, it’s a disgrace she was the one who got cut.

Tommorow is 3x23 Distant Origin!

strongly disagree about Kes carrying an episode, but I will agree with you about how I thought the short lifespan was interesting. I thought it was a great contrast to just about every other species in Trek that lives longer than humans. It would have been interesting in terms of story and characters to see a person's whole life span, how they deal with it how others deal with it and such. It was really the only unique thing about her though

I agree that she was not a ground breaking and fascinating character but she was more interesting than most of the remaining cast. We have already seen Vulcans and Klingons and humans so those were repeats for me. Compared to the rest of the cast she was the most original character and had the most untapped potential. Her unique psychological powers could have been explored a lot more. They should have killed of Harry who was more or less a waste of space.

She had strong potential to be more interesting but ended up not being much of anything. I'm not a fan of hers and didn't mind when she left

That's my feeling. She was ok but they started using her less and less in the show so that by the time she was gone I barely missed her. Very sad but true

Well if they had continued the way they wrote her initially... I felt at first she was the epitome of Star Trek. (You know, to boldly go where no Ocampan had gone before and all that). She was so curious and excited about exploration and learning everything she could. In The Cloud, when Neelix was griping about the ship always being in danger for the sake of exploring, she said something like, she wanted to peek into every corner of the universe.

And how is that different than any Starfleet officer? That is the definition of someone in Starfleet.

It isn't different than any Starfleet officer. It just seemed like she was trying to learn and explore everything she could in her short life. If I didn't explain it well, I'm sorry.

I think that actually didn't come across at all and it should have. As someone who lived sheltered and underground just seeing the stars out the window should have been awe inspiring for her.

This is what I mean when I say the only interesting thing about her is the short life span, everything else has been done. Even if she wanted to learn and explore so does everyone else. That's why they're in Starfleet.

Day 17 – Distant Origin

Another great episode! Obviously they hired some new writers this season or something because this was another fantastic addition. The costumes for the dinosaur people were really good (much better than Kazon!) and the whole concept was fresh and original.

Nearing the end of season 3 tomorrow with 3x25 Worst Case Scenario.

Day 18 – Worst Case Scenario

Okay, this was an average episode. It was another holodeck episode, and derivative of many episodes over the various star trek series. It was okay but nothing too original or important. The first season might have been a lot better if they used some of these ideas to create actual story arcs in the earlier episodes!

I am Excited tomorrow to get back to Borging. I will be watching the season finale 3x26 Scorpion 1.

I have always thought of Worse Case Scenario as a Tom Paris episode even though it's not really a Tom Paris episode.

I enjoy watching the Paris/Tuvok duo much more than Neelix/Tuvok. I wish they had done more episodes together but I'm glad for what we got.

I agree. They work well together.

I do think they work well together with Tom poking fun at him, and of course when they talked about reporgramming one of his mediation holodeck programs
