He was a Lieutenant in First Flight (presumably he started as a Cadet and Ensign). Since I referenced "Admiral Archer" and someone else mentioned "Admiral McCoy", I assumed it was okay to use one-time or mentioned ranks and not necessarily the ones we are most familiar with.
