Blu-Ray in original effects shows remastered for first instant?

Doesn't matter whether it is just for a few minutes, a few seconds or even a split second, if it's not working properly it should be either replaced or repaired! You pay a lot of money to own the item so then it should be as perfect as it is possible to be!

Since different players give different results, it may be a player issue. How exactly would CBS be responsible for some players incorrectly reading the discs? Thing is, I bought each set when released, and have gotten far more than my money's worth out of them. The glitch is meaningless, and is only an issue for people looking for a reason to complain.

I remember worse glitches than that when I was watching the show, 1970s syndication style. And in the early '70s, I was watching it in black and white through heavy "snow." :ack: Those rabbit ears weren't cutting it.

Yup, this really sounds like the player not reading correctly, not the discs. Just do a firmware update, and look up the model online to check for common problems with them.

It is the sort of thing that should have been fixed in later pressings. But which never has been. It doesn't affect S1 or S3, only S2 AFAIK.

It does irritate, but I don't let it bother me too much. After all, it is only a second or two before the 'old' effects kick in.... ;)

Or perfectionists or people who can't stand glitches and want an hour of uninterrupted joy!

Well, it's only fifty-one minutes, and it still likely isn't something that CBS did wrong. So the question still is: why should CBS fix this when it probably isn't their issue?

The original version of Arena (which I am watching now) played perfectly at the beginning on my Sony BD player, but that is a S1 episode. I'll have to try a S2 episode later, I guess. All firmware updates have been installed on my player.

Followup: I put on the S2 episode of The Doomsday Machine, and the new special effects played for a second before the player switched to the original effects. I used the Previous button on the remote to jump to the beginning of the episode, and the original effects began to play normally.

Nice! Good call to try that.

That makes sense of my initial thoughts about the firmware's initialization logic for the feature, and would be useful information in your report to the manufacturer's tech support.

There's a fault like that on a Doctor Who DVD, Revelation of The Daleks! The disc keeps repeating the same scene over and over until either you stop it or you pre-set which effects you want! The old or the new! The same happens on the Kinda disc with the superior CGI snake to the plastic snake held in the air by string! But this is a problem more associated with cheaper players! Do the better quality machines avoid this glitch does anyone know?

My Destiny and Kinda discs have never done this, on any of my players.

I'm using some cheapo Sony blu ray player I got from Best Buy a couple years ago, and it doesn't have this problem.
Oops, spoke too soon. It is happening with S2, but not S1. Did they author the discs differently, or what?

If it's strictly a player problem, why is it JUST Season 2 of Star Trek? Season 1 doesn't do it. Other blurays with different audio tracks don't do it. Maybe CBS mastered the disc oddly so that some players don't play them property but some do.

I see some poor decisions in other aspects of the Star Trek bluray:

No scene by scene access. If you want a resume in the middle of an episode, you must start at the beginning of the episode and fast forward, instead of pressing "next" a few times. I can't think offhand of another bluray or DVD release of ANY TV show or movie that cheaps out to this degree.

The bluray does not save where you were last watching if you turn player off in the middle of an episode. On every other bluray or DVD I've played on my player, if you turn the player off in the middle of a show, when you turn it on again it resumes where you left off.

Same with the settings for audio track and subtitles. On every other bluray, if you set subtitles on and a particular audio track, then turn the player off mid-show, when you turn it back on those settings remain. Not Star Trek.

And the intro splash screen is set to be unskippable and un-fast-forwardable. I know the lawyers told them the copyright notice had to be unskippable, but on most discs the various logos and animations can be either skipped or fast forwarded. This is not a unique issue for Star Trek, but it combines with the other issues that are unique to Star Trek discs to waste several minutes every time you start watching it. They should have a little humility about their animated control screen, once I've seen it once, I don't need to see it again, I just want to chose my episode. Most discs respect that and put the episodes on the main menu for the disc.

Thinking of selling the bluray set and seeing if I can get the DVD set.

Each episode has several chapter stops.. seven, I think? So you can get to the spot you left off at by pressing "next" until you reach the closest chapter, and then forwarding or reversing to the exact scene.

I also don't like that the TOS blu rays don't auto-resume. But this is not uncommon. Other examples I can think of off-hand: Firefly, and ALL the James Bond movies. :(
