Ten Forward Lounge - Miscellaneous General Chat & Welcome Thread

Croeso, retroenzo! =) Welcome to Trek and craziness (not necessarily in that order) :D
I love that anecdote about your granny but it makes me feel a bit old, having witnessed TOS first airing. (Lol, naah, no need to feel guilty! I am a strict believer in the principle that in order to make fun about others one must first be able to make fun of oneself. And if one really is as old as one feels I am constantly oscillating between 17 and 170 anyway ;) )
If you have any problems or questions about the board, please don't hesitate to ask. We'll all be glad to be of assistance.
And make sure to visit the Lounges (there is one for every rank) - they are a great place to make friends. There are quite a few posters here who first met in a Lounge and became real life friends, across borders, continents and seas. There are even a few marriages that started here =)

Ah diolch yn fawr! That's about it for my Welsh language though.

Glad we've got similar feelings though about being able to taking things lightly. And yeah always happy to make new friends but got a few Trek loving friends around me anyway, as well as my girlfriend :) Plus we'll be off to Destination Star Trek in October so looking forward to making new friends then too.

Geoff

Are you serious about the Welsh? I learned quite a bit during a 2 week vacation in Cardiff, years ago, just by listening to the people around me. It seems that Welsh is much in use there.
(And Cardiff has the best fish& chips I ever tried. Plus one of these lovely old-fashioned sweets shops where you get all the tratitional goodies like humbugs, hand-made toffees and lemon drops  )
Sounds like you are rather busy in the Trek community. Over here in Bavaria there's not much of that sort but we have other attractions. Tonight, for example, we have a white dinner in the park. Complete with childrens ballet, live music and baroque-style fireworks =) LOL the frogs in the pond will be surprised how many humans there suddenly are.

Okay I do know the odd bit of Welsh, but certainly not enough to string together a sentence beyond learner level. This is much to my manager's chagrin. He's a fluent Welsh speaker from West Wales and he's making it mission to make us all fluent. I do wish I could speak more Welsh to be honest and have tried taking Welsh lessons on occasion.

And yes I like to think I'm very involved in Trek here. In fact, our Trek group has the idea for a Trek event in the future but can't say too much at the moment as it's still very much under wraps.

Ah yes, Welsh, the language with no vowels.

Actually there's seven vowels but it does appear confusing because 'w' and 'y' are vowels in the Welsh language.

Welsh has quite a lot of vowels. And, alas, some very tricky consonants (I'm still somewhat at war with the double-L).
If you're looking for a language with a minimum of vowels I recommend Yugoslavian or Czech.

Are there no evening classes you could take, retroenzo? Occasionally, employers even take over part of the costs.
I have a CD for learning Welsh on my own . It covers the basics, runs on PC and Mac and uses native speakers in the examples (both the southern and northern Welsh dialects). Still, I learned more from using public transport in Cardiff and keeping my ears and eyes open. It also helped that I play flute/recorder/tin whistle and joined a few open stage nights in the local pubs =) Music is indeed the best language to connect with people

The best one is when you get a double double-L. Then it becomes very confusing. Eg Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch

My current girlfriend and her daughter speak Welsh fluently and she has offered to give me some pointers. But I do also work for a local council and they are offering some Welsh language taster sessions. I did sign up for some a couple of months ago actually, however for various reasons I didn't end up going.

I do think it's a bit ironic that you (in Bavaria) probably know more Welsh than I do (in Wales), as well as the large Welsh speaking community that apparently exists in Patagonia. But while I wish I could speak Welsh, some Welsh speakers put me off as they are quite snobby about it. And this news story didn't help.

Cookie, cooleddie? *passes the plate*

never mind, retroenzo. Everyone has different talents (which is very good, else it'd be a terible boring world). You have a talent for finding Trek fans, uniting them and making friends. And I have an unfair advantage as Bavarian is a very old language and therefore is very similar, both in grammar and in pronounciation, to the Celtic languages.

Mr. Laser Beam, what is CET3K? I googled it but found non explanation. Trek or Doctor Who, I suppose?

oooooooooooh! *bangs head on keyboard* of course! Thanks! :) I guess it shows that I didn't get much sleep the last 2 days...

Good day, everyone.

My name is Ogahd Ahmganadai, and I'm a lapsed Trekker...do we still say Trekker? Is Trekkie okay again? I don't even know anymore. Anyway, around 2005 or so I found my enthusiasm for Trek dampened considerably, and the KT films seemed to heap more dirt on whatever lingering embers there were, but the idea of the guy behind Hannible finally being allowed the reigns to create his own series has renewed my old interest. So, back on to the forums I go.

I used to frequent these boards when I was a very young man.

If the Welsh are missing vowels, just ask the Finnish if you can borrow some. Lots of double vowels, they can spare a few.

No kidding. I'm a motorsports fan so I think they've also got loads of k's and n's to share too: Raikkonen, Hakkonen, Kankunnen, Vatanen, Makkinen, Kovaleinen....
