I understand that it is practically impossible, legally however all that is required is permission in the form of a licensing agreement from the parties with IP you plan on using.

Certainly, that's true. There's some holders that don't go in for it -- the Tolkien estate is another that sort of keeps a wall around the characters. But anything's possible. The upcoming Tarzan/Planet of the Apes comic is something that I never thought I'd see. (A brilliant idea, wish I'd thought of it!)

If they're not, then they're pretty close. I actually did a project on Klingons for an anthropology class back when I was in college, and it really was amazing just how much detailed information there was on them. We had to touch on all of the major aspects of the culture we chose, and there wasn't a single thing I needed that wasn't on Memory Alpha.

As is often the case, the data we have are skewed toward the powerful and thus don't give a complete or unbiased picture of the society. We need more Klingon subaltern studies of the sort glimpsed in texts like "Judgment" and A Burning House.

Indeed. I can say that Prey spends quite a lot of time in some parts of society we haven't seen. Incoming data alert!

Oh, sure there is a lot of stuff we didn't see, but it's still a lot more than the surface glance most alien races get in these kinds of show.

Apparently the secret to getting around that is to go after the movie license. LEGO Dimensions was able to get away crossing over Lord of the Rings with a lot of properties.

Trek Collective has an image of all three covers for Prey without any text on them. Worf looks a bit different on the cover of Book 3 compared to the first we image we got. The change may explain the bad Photoshop effect on the final cover:

Is there any news one way or the other on audiobooks for Prey? Since we got them for Legacies it makes me hopeful that we'll get more.

I really like the costumes Worf and Lorgh are wearing, it's nice to see something different on a Klingon.

I have asked about audio before -- still waiting for word. I certainly think it would be a good candidate for it.

I'm told that the first Prey book managed to sneak out from the printer early and was on sale at Mission New York -- I'd have been there if I'd known, but the odds of it getting out for the show were fairly low when I was planning my travel schedule. (I will be in the building signing for Pocket in October at New York Comic-Con.)

In any event, I'd like to make a quick caution: as with Takedown, there are several mysteries running through the series, so the storyline is unusually sensitive to spoilers. This site's contributors are diligent about masking spoilers, but it's something to watch out for elsewhere, so the caution is given.

Speaking of, I've just finished my website redesign and the Takedown notes will (finally!) be up in a few days. Amazing what you can do when there aren't three books on your desk to proofread at once!

All in all, I think a good crossover between Star Wars and Star Trek can work, so long as all sides are portrayed in a fair manner and without wanking on either side. I'd buy and read it.

Are we sure they're not crossing over already? I'm pretty sure Vilmarh Grahrk from the Dark Horse Star Wars comics is on one of those covers. "Villie heard you want crossover with no wanking! Villie not wank either side, but Villie appreciates your interest! Ha! You like Klingons, yes? Villie woke up with Klingon tattoo on forehead, should maybe not had so much bloodwine."

Heh! Villie's John Ostrander's character, so I'd be more likely to cross Marn "The Gryph" Hierogryph over -- any story with Ferengi would do. I'd say he was related but he's a little short in the ear department -- in addition to being a little short in general!

I've read all of your Star Wars novels/short stories, but I haven't been able to get to Knights of the Old Republic yet. (I hadn't fully experienced the Republic storyline until recently either.) Now that the Legends thing has been more or less settled, I really want to go back through and read from the beginning before fully committing to the newer stuff, and the KOTOR comics are one of the things I'm most looking forward to. Finally getting all of those Gryph in-jokes on certain other forums will be a relief.

Star Trek: Prey Book 1 - Hell's Heart has landed -- at least at my house — and what an appropriate day for it! Couldn't be more delighted to see it. (I'm also running a Twitter giveaway today for signed copies, one of several I expect to do this fall.) On sale everywhere September 27.
