Game Of Thrones Season 6 Discussion (Spoilers)

Saw this yesterday and shared it w/hubby. "Dragons? Really? Is that all you care about? Fine, here's your mother-fucking dragon!"

Two questions for book readers:

Are the long seasons a world wide thing, or a Westeros thing? I ask because I don't recall ever hearing anyone in Essos comment about winter. Initially I thought it was a world wide thing, but lately been thinking it's a Westeros thing.

In the books, does Sam lose weight? Considering he was at the Wall and was probably not eating as much as he was used to, as well as getting more exercise, I would've thought he would've slimmed down some. The actor playing the part, not living in a medieval society when off set, wouldn't necessarily lose weight, but it seems that if you were actually in that world and went from the lap of relative luxury to a place like the wall, you'd shed some pounds. I wondered if this actually happened in the books?

If he has been especially heavy for most of his life I doubt there would be notable change. The body can be frustratingly adept at holding on to energy stores, especially when it has grown accustomed to them.

You'd almost assuredly be getting a lot less fat and probably less protein, but a well-provisioned military garrison in a cold climate is loading you up on carbs--grains likliest--to combat the cold, also keeping your insulin response high, and thus fat stores high and even growing if you lie around too much--not likely at Castle Black even if you are a maester in training. But he is probably taking in no fewer total calories at Castle Black, or not much fewer.

At that point genetics takes over and it's as Venhardi says--the body will fight to retain itself and its metabolic equilibria, and its mass, and how much or how little it does depends on genetics. A high insulin response (triggered by a steady stream of big, high-carb meals) and inherited low insulin sensitivity would keep the fat on.

The constant cold every time he stepped outside would be a drain on calories, and the life he lead at Castle Black was far less sedentary overall than his old life, so he also probably built some muscle under a retained layer of subcutaneous fat (it's stubborn!).

And Sam's arteries probably liked him for the change.

I think this is the most the series has had so far. Nomination in technical categories, or best series are par for the course. But now 6 acting nominations (instead of the usual 1 for Dinklage) , 2 directing nominations and 1 writing nomination too.
Not to complain about such great news (he says as he's about to complain), but... I love that Kit Harrington and Peter Dinklage are still considered supporting actors, Harrington especially. There were stretches of Season 6 where it was clear they were looking for things for Dinklage to do in the Meereen storyline, and he did an amazing job with what little he had, so I won't object to that too much. But how can you possibly still categorize Jon Snow's role as a supporting one when his was by far the dominant character arc of the season? It doesn't really matter since an award's an award, but it just strikes me as strange.

Sophie Turner and Bella Ramsay as Lyanna Mormont were robbed. I know people who weren't even fans of the show who tuned in to watch because they heard about the badass little girl who calls out everyone. Also, nothing for Ramin Djawadi after the brilliant music of the last two episodes, and especially the finale, which was some of his best work of the series? I know it seems silly to nitpick and expect more when the show its highest number of nominations yet, but damn this was a great season and I hate to see some of these people go unrecognized, especially Bella Ramsay for having such a breakout role (not to mention her first major acting role).

ETA: I can't believe I forgot to mention Liam Cunningham's brilliant performance as Ser Davos this season. He had the most moving scene of the finale, and delivered fantastic performances throughout the season. His discovery of Shireen's pyre was heartbreaking based on his facial expressions alone without him saying a word.

I was glad to see Max von Sydow is in it, but what about David Bradley, as long as we're considering the older set? I am going to so miss Walder Frey.

I guess it's because it's an ensemble show, there is no main character around which the whole story revolves only some who get to do more important stuff and are central to the story in a certain region (such as Jon for the North, Dany for the East and Cersei in King's Landing).

It's not either character's exclusive tale so i guess there is not a main actor and the only similar category is Supporting Actor even if's it not technically correct (but then again they didn't know which category to put in Orange is the new Black or they put The Martian in the comedy category ).

This ia a fascinating deleted scene showing a transfomation with Tywin and Pycelle; what an actor can do with character. This is the first I've seen of it. I wish we had seen more (any) of that Pycelle:

A friend of mine saw Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet in Belfast last night, having a meal with Benioff. Momoa was later on Instagram, drinking Guinness. Could mean an appearance in S7 via another vision but I suspect he just had a weekend off from Justice League (which is filming in England) and came over to visit old friends. Despite the much-publicised delay in shooting, they are apparently already filming some studio stuff here.

Wow, I had no idea he was just acting like an idiot.

I always enjoyed that scene in Season 2 where, after his prostitute leaves his cell, Pycelle does a few squats and jigs around, before settling into his "old" routine for the rest of the world to see.

It was a nice wordless example how so many of the characters in Kings Landing are not what they purport to be, especially the perceived weak ones

Hugo - Of all the thousand thousand maladies the gods visit on us… madness is the worst.

There's a scene in season one where Pycelle is talking to a prostitute in his chambers and upon her leaving he starts doing these exercises and stretching like a guy thirty years younger. And then before going out to the passageway he slumps back down like the old codger he normally seems to be. I think that's the only time we get a sense of the act he puts on so people underestimate him.

Ah, got ninja'd!
