I hope so too, but I hate to lose the opening act, I really dug all the introductions with the classic rock.

Suicide Squad has made $465,374,728 worldwide as of Sunday. The combined grosses of both Ghostbusters and Star Trek Beyond don't equal what SS did in 9 days. SS will probably be on top for another week or so. Pete's Dragon looks to be a flop. No biggie, 2016 has been full of them.

No official word on why SS was not permitted to screen in China. However, theory is SS was censored for the same reasons Ghostbusters was. The supernatural elements in the film, and China's population allegedly being very superstitious (according to the censors).

Fingers crossed that we get a longer/alt version on home release a la Bat v Supes.
Yes.
I'm not hugely interested in BvS to be honest, but I'd love to have the chance to compare the two cuts of SS.
See, THIS is the kind of thing internet petitions are for! ;) But AFAIK no-one's started one yet.

A discussion about what was cut from Suicide Squad. Most intriguing is the Joker-as-Batman figurine produced as tie-in merchandise.... (from 8:43):

Just saw the movie and I'm sad to say I'm disappointed. I had hopes going in that this would be the turning point for the DC movies, but it suffered from a lot of the same issues as BvS.
Weak villain, overly complicated and poorly explained plot, multiple unconnected subplots and large cast of supporting characters with not very much to do, garnished with a few unnecessary cameos and some truly cringe worthy lines.

The result is a garbled, poorly paced mess with editing that makes it feel less like a movie than a two hour long trailer.

The shame of it is that a few of the character performances were really good, even if their character arcs were nonsensical.

It's not often I get so totally fooled by the trailers and it's actually made me very nervous about Wonder Woman since the trailers for that look good too...

Fingers crossed that we get a longer/alt version on home release a la Bat v Supes.
All that did is take an incoherently bad movie and made it a slightly more coherent bad movie. I suspect the same would be the case here.

It's a bummer about SS not getting a Chinese release. GOTG made $98 million in August at the Chinese BO.

No official word has been given as to why SS was censored, but the theory is it was the same reason as Ghostbusters. Supernatural + magical elements and the China's censors asserting their population is very superstitious. With the Enchantress (spirit possession) and magic being such a big part of the movie, there is no way they could edit the film to make it acceptable.

It makes sense, in a sense. Doctor Strange has been allegedly tailor made to remove as much magical/supernatural elements as possible and make things more scientific base. That and removing the Tibetan elements from the Ancient One.

You know that WB let the company that made the trailers edit the actual movie?

I do now. If true that's about as moronic a studio decision as I've ever heard. Even more moronic than the whole "we need to rename 'Back to the Future' as 'Spaceman from Pluto' thing". Did they also hire the poster guy to do the VFX? It would explain the bad 90's CG on the brother warlock McFlamey Chest person.

I don't see how the plot was overly complicated. Evil sorcereress building spell to take over world. Bad guys sent in to take her out.

Great, except that wasn't actually the plot. The plot was: "shadowy government person creates a team of bad guys to handle threats in Superman's absence only to immediately create such a threat as a direct result of forming said team then sending said team to come and rescue her from the mess she created. And-also-the-Joker-shows-up-to-wave-at-the-audience-and-have-zero-impact-on-anything-and-something-something-government-and-military-are-the-real-bad-guys-something-something-pink-unicorns." ;)

Don't get me wrong, the basic concept is very workable, but the execution is a mess.

I may be misremembering but I recall a line in there somewhere about her being from another dimension. How hard would it be to emphasise that in the translation?

With the Ancient One, it's more of a cultural thing. The Chinese and Tibetan governments have beef with one another, and happen to share a border. So rather than offend the Chinese censors the role of a Tibetan man was recast and alter to fit a "Celtic" woman. The move will still have supernatural elements to it, but it'll be under the guise of science looking like magic, allegedly. The same way the Asgardians are considered aliens and not actual gods.

I'm talking about the Enchantress. It seems a simple thing to frame her as an alien entity masquerading as a god than an actual supernatural being in the Chinese release. Indeed, my whole point was that they sort of do that anyway in the actual script.

Has it been 100% confirmed about the trailer team editing the final cut rumor?
It was in that Hollywood Reporter article, has been bandied about a lot, and there's not been a word of denial. You'd think if it was untrue they'd be quick to deny it, given how stupid it makes the studio sound.

and there's not been a word of denial.
Ayer has "sort of" denied it...
“…there’s definitely over 10 minutes of [deleted] material on [the forthcoming home video release]. But this cut of the movie is my cut, there’s no sort of parallel universe version of the movie, the released movie is my cut [...]

But then said in a more recent interview...
“There’s a linear version we did where it opens up with June in the cave and tells the story in sequence with the arrests and Batman, and then we go to Belle Reve. Honestly, there may be six or seven different versions of the film. In that version, [test] audiences were left with a lot of questions and a little disoriented as to who to watch and why. So we came up with what we call the ‘dossier’ version which has Amanda presenting the backstories and origins of the various members.”

^If that's the reason why they came up with the janky-arsed trying-way-too-hard-to-be-edgy introduction where each character gets a mini-backstory trailer then I think they should stop using test screenings. Clearly they cannot be trusted with the results.

Watched Assault On Arkham again at weekend, and even for an animated film it's 10x the movie SS is in the way of plot, character, humour and action. The main curious visual similarities (though perhaps predictable) I found were:
*dossier/graphic intros to Task Force X/SS (though done much better)
*disposable head-boom squad member (KGBeast here, though I guess he'd already been offed in BvS)
*Harley smashing a window
Probably more others might spot. It did also make me realise that, much as I liked Kinnaman's Rick Flagg performance, he and his men were really pretty redundant bar the forced romance subplot.

Me too. I've seen a few people complain about the music and stuff, but I loved that whole sequence.
I think the fact that SS is only performing slightly behind BVS at this point, despite not starring Batman OR Superman OR Wonder Woman or being a sequel, is an amazing accomplishment.
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/ 10 day total: SS $223m vs. BVS $260m

I don't see how the plot was overly complicated. Evil sorcereress building spell to take over world. Bad guys sent in to take her out.
I keep seeing people complain about the plot not making sense, but mostly made sense to me from start to finish. The only very minor thing that bugged was June appearing to be killed, and then suddenly being fine in the end. Other than that I had no problems whatsoever with the overall story.

It sounds like that must be the version the novel was based on, I wonder how different the rest of it is?

I was under the impression that the trailer company chose the music for the film, and were not the ones who edited it all. Hence the soundtrack being odd at several points during the movie. Likely last minute additions to make SS similar to GOTG.

I did see something about them coming in to work on the editing, but I'm not sure how much they actually did on the final version we saw.
