Spider-Man: Homecoming' anticipation thread

It was Ultimate Spider-Man that started the idea of having all the characters in high school back in 2000.

The movies just picked up on that idea.

At least now spiderman is being played by an actor that actually looks like he could be in high school.

Agreed. As much as I loved Tobey Maguire's performance, he was clearly well into his adult years (27)--the same with Dunst (20) and both could not pass for a senior in high school if their lives depended on it.

To be fair, Toby Maguire was only supposed to be a teenager for a little bit of the first part of the movie. After that, he's supposed to be older. I prefer the adult Spider-Man anyway, he's been an adult for the majority of his existence (at least in the mainstream Marvel Universe).

I was reading through the descriptions of the early ASMs on Comixology a while back and I was amazed how little time they actually spent with Peter and friends in high school.

But the fact he was in high school at all--but played by someone nearly 30 years old, was a stretch. They should have used two actors like Superman the Movie, with Jeff East as the high school / 1st appearance in the costume Clark, and Christopher Reeve as the full-on adult hero.

Out of curiosity, just a random look back at non-Maguire / Garfield productions, Peter's high school and college time was explored in:

  • Spider-Man (1967-70 - ABC cartoon) - high school and college.
  • The Amazing Spider-Man (1977-79 - CBS live action series) - college.
  • Spider-Man (1978-79 - Toei live action TV series) 22 years old, and no school history mentioned.
  • Spider-Man (1981-82 - syndicated cartoon) - college.
  • Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends (1981-83 - NBC cartoon) - college.
  • Spider-Man (1994-98 - Fox Kids cartoon) - college.
  • Spider-Man: The New Animated Series (2003 - MTV cartoon) - college.
  • The Spectacular Spider-Man (2008-09 - CW/Disney XD cartoon) - high school.
  • Ultimate Spider-Man ( 2012-present - Disney XD cartoon) - high school.
So, more productions centered on Peter's college years than high school, even in animation where there's no actor age to worry about. At least with Homecoming, Holland is 20, but really looks several years younger.

After the last TWO Spider-Man movie series petered out into oblivion and then they are starting a completely different one, I find myself asking myself, "Why should I care?"

Because the people behind them now actually know what they're doing with the property.

Jeff East was in the suit? I don't remember that at all. :wtf:

It's at the end of the Fortress of Solitude sequence. It looks like East, who had to wear a Reeve-styled wig and Reeve styled nose appliance (East said Reeve was sort of uncomfortable with that). That, and the physical build is different than Reeve. Plus, it reserved the payoff of Reeve-Superman's first night in Metropolis.

You should if you like Spider-Man. If not, then perhaps you shouldn't care. I like Spider-Man and I'm looking forward to the movie, but I've yet to see the two Amazing films because I haven't gotten around to it yet. Strange that, but true.

Maguire looked young enough to portray a high school student for the first 30 to 40 minutes of the first movie to me.

Frankly, I'm frustrated that Marvel has rebooted Spider-man back to high school . . . again. It's getting redundant.

Seeing as the MCU generally follows a timeline relatively parallel to the real passage of time, it is likely that only this first movie will be set in his highschool years. Being a kid compared to the rest of the heroes is reason enough to highlight that difference for a single flick. High school is also a time when (unlike the average undergraduate's college tenure in these days of delayed adolescence) the repercussions for not showing up for a class, or getting in a fight, or not coming home on time and other family obligations are seen as much more dire problems for a straight-laced kid trying to keep their shit together.

It's only Phase Two where they did that. Phase One had three movies take place within a week of each other.

The three movies that took place in the same week were in phase two (Iron Man 3, Thor 2 and Cap 2). As far as I can tell Phase 1 took place in a sort of compressed timeline (supposedly Iron man 1 and 2 are only about a year apart). The 'real time rule' came into effect after Cap 2 and I believe it was intended to be the MCU standard from then on.

The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2 & Thor are all happening at the same time in phase one.

Are you about the Incredible HulK? I think it takes place shortly after IM and some time before IM2 based on the end credits scene in Hulk.

Ah, I didn't realize they'd done that twice.
I don't think IM3, Cap 2 and Thor 2 are in the same week. Agents of Shield referenced Thor 2 and Cap 2 and there were nine episodes between the two films. There is timeline for MCU in this wiki:
http://marvelcinematicuniverse.wikia.com/wiki/Timeline

The Russo brothers in an interview before Cap 3 was released said they approach the films as if real time was the same amount of time that happened between the recent films. So Cap 3 is two years after Cap 2 and one year after Avengers 2.

Yeah, only IM2, TIH, and Thor all took place roughly around the same time. The franchise has otherwise been moving forward roughly contemporaneously with real time. Captain America: Civil War even outright referenced that it had been eight years since Tony Stark became Iron Man, and Iron Man was released in 2008.
