Lack of interest and/or sales couldn't be the reason for cancellation?

I got the impression from my comic book store that their sales of Ongoing weren't great.

They are just one local store, but they are the biggest outlet around these parts.

Hypothetically, sure. I'm just saying that, in this day and age, it can no longer be assumed to be the reason, because the relaunch practice has become so routine.

Maybe that's because it's been so long since the last movie. Maybe if Beyond does well, there will be renewed interest in the comics.

Honestly, I think there's a lot of factor contributing to the Ongoing series ending, including the fact that Beyond introduces some changes for the crew and the fact that the comics were Orci's thing and he's no longer involved with the franchise. Of course, there will be Abramsverse comics again at some point, likely after Beyond's theatrical run is complete and Paramount decides if the movie series will continue.

Exactly, that's what threw me. It's just a long, interesting road to Nibiru, apparently. :rommie: Carol Marcus appears in the briefing room not long before the crisis with the computer happens--and as far as I can tell, she doesn't appear in the post-STID scenes in the beginning of the story at all. It's probably an annoying art error more than anything else. (Of which, yes, there's probably a long history of art errors in comics, including this very series, so annoyance would be illogical etc, etc.) We could say she's Chapel before she transfers, taking some fashion advice from her friend on Earth. ;)

Thank you, I think that is the order I'll go with. Gives the Enterprise time to be repaired after the Gorn damage and all.

i'm hoping we get to see what happens during the last two years of Kirk's five-year mission. I mean we're already three years in might as well see how it ends.

Recently I have been checking the sales of IDW's Star Trek comics on Comichron (thus I don't know if the number of sales are accurate, this might be the number of comics bought by retailers and that the number of sales are even lower) and it is not good.
Since the ongoing comic started in September 2011 the series has lost a third in its sold numbers. (some other ST series have even lower sales)

I am not sure that a relaunch will reinvigorate the series.
There seems to have been a steady decline in the sales of Star Trek comics (and comics in general), perhaps because there is no new television series to make people interested in spin off material.
The new movies only happen every couple of years, I don't think that is enough to create a new fandom.

Well, "Altered Encounters, Part 1" is rather interesting despite being relatively pointless.

I guess it is mostly fun because it is the 'classic incarnation' meets the 'new incarnation', but the story felt like a pretty long extended introduction so far.
Truth be told, I have come to dislike these type of stories, especially in the ongoing series. It feels to much "Lets do what has already been done before" like so many of the ongoing comics do.
That is one reason why I stopped reading them and collecting IDW Star Trek comics in general. (I read this issue in the comic book store)

i enjoyed the first issue and was surprised but it seems weird that after The Khitomer Conflict, The Q Gambit and Legacy of Spock this particular idea is condensed into a two issues story, you;d think they'd make more of a fuss.

Well, there will be a new TV series next year, and the advance reviews for Beyond are, in TrekMovie.com's words, "Overwhelmingly Positive." Star Trek has had lulls in popularity before, and every time, some have feared it would be permanent. But here we are about to celebrate the franchise's 50th anniversary.

I don't think this will be the end of the Kelvin Timeline. It already sounds very likely we'll be getting a fourth movie, and we don't know for sure that this will be the last KT comic. All we know is that this is the end of this version of the comic, it could very well just be relaunching after Beyond in order to reflect whatever changes it brings about.

With some notable exceptions, it's become increasingly rare for an ongoing comic book to last more than 60 issues these days. I'm really surprised that this volume lasted this long, since it could have easily been relaunched with a new #1 after Into Darkness, IMO.

Actually, having read the comics in a little more detail, I think the best order is "Countdown to Darkness", the 2013 video game, the flashback scenes in I, Enterprise, and then "Into Darkness". In Countdown, Sulu mentions that he hasn't been planetside since the Archon incident, but the video game plot has him on at least one planet. (True, we could discount the line for a number of reasons, but we might as well be consistent as possible...)

If it does, I *really* hope the new title is Star Trek: Beyond Beyond ! :p

STARTING OCTOBER: Star Trek: Boldly Go - set after Beyond

"Boldly Go is gonna be more of a serialized story, less of the bottled episodes and more of an ongoing story, for lack of a better word. We're getting away from the sort of paradigm of you roll up to a planet, something weird happens, [you] get in trouble, you've got to the solve the problem. This is more throwing all of the characters into new situations. They're not all going to be together. We're going to follow multiple threads of the characters as they each encounter new situations.

We've moved away from reimagining classic episodes in favor of doing new stuff. And we're still going to continue to do new things -- the priority being new things in the new series, but I will say that the antagonist of the first arc of this new series is a classic Trek villain. But you haven't seen them in the Kelvin timeline. I'm hoping that when people find out who it is they're going to be really excited about the book. That's as teaser-y as I can be. When it's revealed, I'd love to talk again. You might have some questions, so stay tuned for issue number one, [where] we will find out who that classic villain is."

Oh happy day. This has literally made my day. Makes me wonder what they are going to do with the Chekov character as Anton Yelchin has passed away.

I'm pleased with this. It kind of reminds me of how DC handled things between Star Treks III-IV when the Enterprise was gone.

It'd be nice if they kept using the character in the comics in honor of Yelchin, the way the Enterprise novels kept using Cutler rather than killing her off because of Waymire's passing. But I don't imagine that could last past the next movie after Beyond. Unless they recast Chekov I guess, but that would probably be awkward to say the least.

Abrams has already said Chekov won't be recast. So, I imagine addressing Chekov's eventual fate is something this series will get to at some point.
