I thought Kirk explained it quite well. And it did turn out that they needed the blood in Kirk and Garrovik to attract the creature to the bomb. Of course the question is : Why did they move the bomb away from the hemoglobin container? I do like the remastered effect of the blast pattern seen on the planet as Enterprise leaves. I would think that a blast that powerful would have cratered (and vaporized) the planet's crust enough to release molten rock and create a huge caldera. That would have looked cool.
I love the first appearance of the bowling ball bomb. And it looks like a fancy bowling ball.
