The new Sulu is gay.
The old Sulu probably was not.
There's no reason to try to force explanations as to why original Sulu may or may not have been gay. It shouldn't really matter. And it's not like Sulu's sexuality was an integral part of his character. Other than Kirk, it didn't really matter that much what anyone's sexuality was in the original Star Trek.
This revelation sounds like it will be handled in a fairly subtle way, and will likely have no effect on the overall story.
It was a nice "gift" to Takei, and his reasons for not being happy about it are confusing, but personal, and we should respect them.
Frankly, Star Trek should have had a gay character years ago (and not because fans clamored for it; I am never a fan of 'pandering' to the fans), but because Star Trek has always been about diversity, and showing a future where everyone is included and we all work together.
Unlike many other creative works, Star Trek sadly became more safe over time, afraid to push the envelope. So on this issue, they arrived too late to the party; so late that it really shouldn't be a big deal.
This is nice way to make up for lost time.
If you can't handle it, your old video cassettes should still work just fine.

He is correct though. Takei did not like the idea when they told him about it and still does not like it. I can see where he is coming from. He believes that Gene did not create Sulu as a gay character and Takei always played him straight. Takei believed they should have created a totally new character that was gay. From the linked article below it seems that Takei is concerned with Genes creation and how its being changed. Takei was obviously good friends with Gene and he is trying to protect what his friend created. The article below is an interesting read and I very much agree with Takei and understand his reasoning.

To be blunt, if you were gay you'd likely have had a very different life experience than the one you've had, so in point of fact, you have no clue how you would feel in such circumstances.

I think he did. He was a minority that had a important role in Star Trek in the mid 1960s. Gene was able to populate that Bridge with minorities that performed important functions. Not bad for 1966. There were plenty of episodes where we get to see Sulu working as part of the Enterprise team. He didn't get his own episode but that could largely be because he took time off to make a few movies. No I think Sulu was showcased pretty nicely in the series in episodes like the Naked Now and Mirror, Mirror.
Seems to me that if any characters were to be gay it should've been Kirk/Spock, the originators of slash.With the whole Thy'la(sp) thing that means, friend, lover and brother. Audiences would probably uber freak at that though.
Heres a in joke scene from TOS. Pretty funny and pretty impressive that Roddenberry got it past the censors of the 1960s.
Actually, for 1966 it was rather weak. Trek could have and should have done better by its minority characters. Other shows did better. If fact Sulu's role was easily replaced( as was Uhura's and Chekov's) in some episodes. "Course laid in" isn't exactly riveting and groundbreaking. Now a Dr. Sulu or Engineer Sulu would have been something.
Being part of the team usually meant playing second or third fiddle. Again, not very groundbreaking. He didn't take all three seasons off, just part of one.

Don't get me wrong, I am thrilled for some inclusion now in Trek after 50 years, and this is now an element I'll sit through the film to witness, but something about it just smacks of lip service just because George Takei happens to be gay.
