HUGE Mr Sulu Spoiler

But...he's being made gay as an 'homage' to him. This is kind of the same sort of self-aware fan-wank that brought us Spock yelling "Khaaan!" simply because it's become a Youtube meme.

Agree entirely. What makes this really quite wrong is that Takei always gave off the gay vibe, especially during that TOS scene. . .half naked, dripping sweat, thrusting his sword around, and generally being as camp as a row of tents. Cho isn't gay, nor does he play Sulu as gay, but now just to be politically correct, fact is being mixed with fiction purely as an excuse to shoehorn homosexuality in to Star Trek, and Cho will probably be told to start camping up his performance just to reinforce the point. I wonder if he's got the "gay voice" down pat yet?

We've already got Quinto who can't hide his sexuality while playing Spock, and TBH, his relationship (such as it is) with Uhura makes me cringe because he simply can't act straight. As far as I'm concerned, Quinto's Spock might as well be gay, and the Uhura thing is just a beard. What's going to be next? Kirk bedding McCoy? Scotty nailing a Tribble for comedy value?

Liberal Hollywood at its worst.

I've no issue with homosexuality being represented in Star Trek. I just don't like the way it's being forced on the audience.

I started to type a response to Bear and other people who have a problem with this, but I really can't be bothered.

This is great news, I'm very happy about this. I haven't much liked the reboot films, and I planned to skip this one, but just because of this I will probably go to see 'Beyond'.

They made a character gay. Thats it. They made a character gay. Nothing is being forced on anyone. Again, they made a character gay.

You say you have no issue with it, but you certainly act like you have a big one.

Inconceivable! I still would like him to explain what the gay voice, or acting gay means. Cause you know, you can't be gay unless you have a lisp or act effeminate.

John Cho is a professional actor and I have no doubt that Sulu will continue to be portrayed as an efficient officer.

I was watching "Balance of Terror" last night, and I was wondering if Sulu was the Romulan spy that Styles was concerned about. Nothing to do with the thread at hand other than it being about Sulu.

I'd hate to hear what you'd say if you did have a problem with homosexuality in Trek.

These scenes are very well done...

Homophobes aghast at the thought of someone, god forbid, being gay, or bi can rest easy...the scenes in question are very much open to interpretation.

So you have no problem with it as long as you don't have to see it expressed in any form whatsoever, or even acknowledged in an off-hand manner. Are you sure you know what it mans to have no issue with something? Because it looks like you have a major issue with it, possibly even a subscription.

There's no arguing with that crowd, Coloratura. These are the people that for some reason were okay with other minorities portrayed on Star Trek, and then when someone is shown to have a different sexual orientation than them, suddenly this portrayal of minorities is being "forced on the audience." Because diversity comes in race, sexual orientation, level of disability, and many other ways, and you can't just reject one form of diversity while accepting another.

Apparently George Takei is not happy that Sulu is gay: "I think it's really unfortunate".

"Not long after Cho's bombshell call came another, this one from Lin, again informing that Sulu was indeed to be gay in Star Trek Beyond. Takei remained steadfastly opposed to the decision."

It's unfortunate that he disagrees with the portrayal, and I can somewhat understand why. He's entitled to that opinion, which I respect. But he also says that he's "delighted that there is a gay character." So, there's a silver lining. I think most fans are pleased with it.

Ummm...
Nichelle Nichols is cast to represent African Americans = Check
George Takei is cast to represent Asians = Check
Walter Koenig is cast to represent Russians = Check
Sulu is also made to represent Gays = Ewww, yucky!! This is "Liberal Hollywood" and being "Politically Correct," let's lose our minds!!!
