HUGE Mr Sulu Spoiler

This news is all over the internet. I actually think it helps generate buzz for the film. Good marketing.

I don't care whether Sulu is gay or not. I just want it implemented properly in the film. Hundreds of years into the future, no one would care if you were gay or not. They probably won't even have a word for it.

1) Sulu's romantic life was never touched upon in the Prime Universe so it is possible Prime Sulu was also gay. His sexuality has never been cannon, it was assumed he was straight but never stated.

Wasn't there that one embarrassing scene in TMP where Sulu gets all gaga and smitten by Ilia?

IMHO, this move isn't the progressive move forward that some are thinking it is. It kind of says "hey, if you're a gay actor, your roles have to be seen as gay." Gay actors should feel they can play straight roles too and vice versa (think Brokeback Mountain). It's probably part of why Takei was in the closet for so long, that if he came out he'd only be given gay roles (which are few and far between).

Definitely not cool. That is all you could come up with? A slam that involves someone that was tragically killed.

Given Pine's ludicrous comments the other week that Star Trek can longer be allowed to do anything remotely approaching high brow, I was going for the comedy angle, something, which given Pine's words, I can only assume will be used to reveal Sulu's sexuality.

I can see it now. The scene in the 4th Abrams Trek film where Sulu goes to bed, wakes up in the morning, turns over to gaze lovingly at Chekov, before screaming Who the hell are you?

It doesn't say that at all. Cho is straight, playing a gay man. Quinto is gay, portraying a straight character.

John Cho isn't gay, so that doesn't apply in this case.

Don't tell me everyone in Hollywood didn't know Takei was gay for decades before he came out. Even I'd been told he was gay years before. Never stopped him from getting work.

Well, first off, George Takei isn't playing Sulu in STB. Secondly, John Cho, who is straight (AFAIK), is.

As for what sort of work Takei is getting, I can't speak to his recent live action work, because I'm not familiar with it, but as for his voice work he is getting parts where the character is not known to be gay. So, that's enough to shoot down what you're saying about him "only be given gay roles".

So, in a word, regarding what you are saying: No.

I love how you completely ignore BillJ's comment about how it was in such poor taste for you to use Chekov to bash Sulu (even though you directly quote him), and then proceed to continue on with your nonsensical comments. Like I said before, a totally class act here.

FYI to the OP: when you mouse over the subject line, it reveals the link (which contains the spoiler). So, you might want to hide it behind a spoiler tag for the benefit of those who accidentally mouse over it! (which I did, but I'm not too upset by the spoiler).
Spoiler tags have now been added to the link. I think it solves that issue, but anyone feel free to let me know if the fix isn't working for them.

True. A somewhat cringeworthy demonstration of why Deltans are so attractive, they have to swear celibacy.

It's a deleted scene though... not included in either the theatrical, or Robert Wise's preferred Director's Edition.

I have no issue with this. Sulu's romantic life was never touched on in the original series so this definitely works.

Demora was an out of left field revelation in Generations. I assume in the prime universe that she is his biological kid as I don't see why a career officer who has spent most of his life in space would adopt a child he likely would barely see.

What does "I hope they do it properly" even mean?

Unless Sulu's going around acting flamboyant and calling everyone fabulous, how can you do it wrong? Yes, a character shouldn't be known just as Star Trek's resident gay guy, but it's still a silly thing to say IMO.

Not sure, but there us a scene in ST5 where he n Chekov walking behind a Klingon female drooling so not sure where he's gay

Seems forced introduction to me but as I've always said 2 gay guys coupling up leaves 2 additional females free. So all good

Feel there will definitely be a gay character ir 2 in new tv series n that's cool

And again I have no problem with this. My point is that if anything, it's now a retcon that Sulu was always gay, since nuSulu was born before Nero's incursion (I think), so technically he's the same guy as Prime Sulu, and that I don't quite think living in a parallel universe was the cause of his homosexuality.

It works a whole lot better if you accept that nothing about the Abramsverse connects with the Prime Universe, not even before Nero's incursion. There are simply too many differences. Chekov being closer in age to Kirk (or he's some wunderkind)/born the wrong year for one.

Completely different universe from start to finish. Problem solved.

Except that the new movie includes a Warp 4 star ship from the NX program, and Marcus' desk already shows the NX progression, with the NX-01 as having existed.

The two universes are shown to have been combined at some point until at least the Earth Romulan War. So they do have a common beginning, sorry.

But I do have to wonder why Sulu always being gay is such a problem for some people.

Being gay doesn't make you infertile. He doesn't have to adopt to have a child.
