HUGE Mr Sulu Spoiler

Ohhhhhh myyyyyyyyyy.

I wouldn't call it a HUGE spoiler, it's just a character's sexuality, but I like it nonetheless. Very cool.

Thought I'd call it that for insurance - people can get very particular with spoilers!! Nice tribute to George Takei.

I don't know how I feel about this, to be honest. I mean, yes it's great Star Trek has finally made some efforts to acknowledge homosexuality, Sulu is not the character I would have chosen. George Takei has been insistent even after he publicly came out that he believes Sulu to be straight. Although I'm sure he's not complaining about this news, I still would have honoured his intention. And before anyone suggests "well he's straight in Prime, and gay in Abramsverse" does that even make sense? The presence of Demora kind of muddles the issue, I'm guessing she's adopted in the Abramsverse. What about the Prime Universe? Did Sulu and his (presumably) female partner adopt her there, too? I guess it's possible, or maybe we now assume Prime Sulu was gay too? I guess there's no reason based on what we saw in TOS and its movies that he can't be, and Takei's intent certainly isn't canon.

Whatever, I'm clearly overthinking this. Let's all just be glad we have our first gay main character in the Trek franchise after fifty years.

FYI to the OP: when you mouse over the subject line, it reveals the link (which contains the spoiler). So, you might want to hide it behind a spoiler tag for the benefit of those who accidentally mouse over it! (which I did, but I'm not too upset by the spoiler).

I felt a great disturbance in The Force, as if millions of bigots suddenly cried out in terror.

Oh wait, wrong franchise. :D But seriously, I can't wait to see homophobic fanboys spinning like the blades on the Enterprise's warp nacelles at the thought of Sulu belonging to my tribe.

Meh...I was halfway expecting it, just a bit surprised they did it in the movie and didn't wait for the TV series but whatever....

While I have no problem whatsoever with nuSulu being gay, I always felt that something like this wasn't really necessary. I mean, it was Takei who was gay, not the character he played.

Gay people can have children, you know.

I think it works. We never really see Sulu have a relationship with a woman during the series or movies. So he was a blank slate as far as sexuality is concerned.

I guess what I mean is that Sulu as conceived in 1966 obviously wasn't meant to be gay, whether he was seen with women or not.
