Star Trek 2017 will not be set in the JJ-Verse

Casual audiences could appreciate the clear line of separation, especially since the upcoming show will be part of the original timeline – not the alternate universe that began in 2009.

Clearly the person who wrote this statement has no idea what they're talking about. "Casual" audiences will not be able to tell if the show will be in the prime universe instead of the Abramsverse, because "casual" audiences will not know the difference.

The only people who care about which universe things are set in are the relatively small percentage of hardcore trufans who post on this bulletin board.

Yeah. My "casual" friends at first didn't realize that "Enterprise" was set before Kirk. And they sure think the JJmovies took place right before the TOS-series. Being a bit more "loose" with canon is certainly a good thing. I only want this series to be set post-TNG (although using modern aesthetics) because every other timeline/timeframe opens up certain audience expectations about what we should see during that time, or what is supposed to happen at that time with this-and-such species.

The TV show will either be talked about in the Original Timeline, the Kelvin Timeline, or a Timeline to be named later.

And it may be awhile - even after the show begins - before we find out which one it is.

I mean, it's not like they're going to come right out and TELL us which timeline it is. They'll leave it up to the viewer to suss out the details.

If it's Prime Timeline but it carries over all the JJ aesthetics, I'll be pretty pissed. I think it's time we closed the history books on the passing fad of lens flare and shaky cam. Even Beyond seems to be going with a darker cinematography.

Shaky cam complaints have been around for decades now and still various shows insist on using it. I first became very aware of it on NYPD Blues with David Caruso. It's why I didn't even give the show a try after observing just a few scenes. The camera was far too frustrating.

But the history is much longer:

They might save it for a big reveal in the second season. A way to keep us watching. :)
That seems a little manufactured and too much like sexual tension to me - when it's resolved, interest suddenly drops. Sam & Diane - Cheers; Madelyn and David - Moonlighting. It's unimmersive to have a real-world question looming over the show instead of tensions and mysteries that are in-world. Why would the characters have that pre-commercial dramatic pause look on their face when we are about to find out? It shouldn't be the gimmick about the show. I hope they'll just be honest about it up front.

I wouldn't compare it to sexual tension. It wouldn't be a plot-point in-universe, after all (or I certainly hope not). If done well, it would be a strong story point which could also give knowledgable fans an "a-ha" moment.
E.g. Because of Serious Business, the Enterprise-G must rush to a grand council meeting on Vulcan. They finally get there, and we see that the meeting place is a space station floating amidst the ruins of the planet.

why not do a year in the mirror universe? Like Enterprise wanted to do? I like the anthology approach!

Ewww. No.

I like the Mirror Universe just fine to visit but an entire season set there would be pointless. I can totally imagine the desperate for ratings Enterprise series doing that.

What if The Powers That Be fail to make a definite choice between timelines? What if the result is a muddled timeline rather than a definitive/distinctive one?
