Preacher - AMC TV Show - Discussion Thread

It's AMC. They want a new Walking Dead that'll last 16 seasons. 1 trade does not = one season. What sort of moron would run out of source material in the first ten episodes?

Look at how they used Lenny James in Walking Dead, once a season, for years, following the group slowly, till he finally caught up.
I have (a) never expected the show to adhere to the structure of the comic books (because frankly, it's an utter mess at the beginning) or (b) drop every major plot point right up front - as I noted in my first post, I was well aware that the producers wanted to use the first season almost as a prequel.

Which is fine and I supported it. But they need to move the characters forward, generate motivation and develop character traits. Thus far, the three episodes have replayed the same themes with each character over and over, little in episode three revealed anything new we hadn't seen in episode one.

One of my favourite shows is Mad Men - some SEASONS, little plot movement played out, but characters moved and advanced (or regressed when called for it) episode on episode. Given Sam Catlin's pedigree with Breaking Bad I was expecting more thoughtful developing characters. I appreciate it is episode three, and I enjoy the performances and the aesthetic, so I am happy to carry on, but they do need to start moving Jesse et al forward.

Odd choice of Lennie from TWD. I don't watch the show, but I do know he wasn't a character in the comics, so using him as an example of "parcelling out comic story piecemeal" is a little strange.

One fun thing I noted - the episode titles of #2/3 "See" and "The Possibilities" - I was wondering if we had another BB callback from Catlin where episode titles join up to give further meaning (best examples are S2 of BB and S2 of BCS) - sadly not looking at eps #4/5's title. Pity.

Once again, Tulip is one of the most fun parts of this show. Although Cassidy might not agree.

What is it going to take for him to notice Emily? He doesn't really see her yet. He didn't even care that she'd have to hire a babysitter to keep her kids while she picked up that tv for him. He could have picked up that tv, but he had her do it. He's as cold to her as his father was to him.

The pacing has been unusual, they don't seem to be in any hurry to push the story and it's unfolded in kind of an aloof manner.

I'm watching it with my friend who knows nothing of the comics, and I asked what she thought. She said well the characters are interesting, but nothing ever happens on the show!

I wish more people were watching this. It's ratings are abysmal and it may not get to see its storyline through. Sad. Yet AMC gets to churn out that crappy Fear The Walking Dead and 89 seasons of Hell On Wheels.

That would be really tragic, because it seems like the entire first season is basically going to be them sitting around town waiting for the comic book storyline to begin in the season finale.

Like a lot of first season shows, Preacher is just setting up the characters before throwing them into the major story lines. We have to know something about the characters' motivations and backgrounds to understand what drives them. It looks like things are going to be picking up now. I can't wait to see what happens after last week's Cassidy/Tulip altercation and Jesse's use of The Voice.

I just realized I haven't posted in here since I got caught up, but I am loving the show so far. The three main characters are great, and most of the supporting characters are pretty good too. The plot has been moving a little slowly, but the rest of the show has been good enough that it hasn't bothered me to much. It does look like things are starting to pick up now though.
It looks like they're setting up a confrontation between Donny and Jessie, and I don't see that ending well for Donny.

I really didn't see Cassidy and Tulip happening. And what happened with Odin Quinncannon? Did Jesse's Voice have a short shelf life? Will others do bad things too? Fun show!

I suspect Quincannon has his own interpretation of what it means to serve God.

I'm really digging this prequel of sorts. It's kinda like Issue zero of a comic book. I loved the Preacher comic and I'm really loving the show. It kinda reminds me of the first season of The Leftovers, pacing wise.

That was my take on it, as well. There are plenty of serial killers who thought they were doing God's work. There are plenty of soldiers who think that by killing they are doing God's work.

Plus, Jesse wasn't specific about what God to follow or how to follow that God.

From what I know, Jesse's power doesn't have an expiration date, but as we saw in the pilot, just because he says one thing, doesn't mean that the person listening is going to take it the way he meant.

From an interview with Jackie Earle Haley:

I think when Jesse applies the Word of God, sometimes it works the way that he intends it to and sometimes it doesn’t. Whatever Jesse intended, Odin got the message and he’s serving God in his own twisted way. When he shoots those people, he’s protecting his people, his town and his company.

It will be interesting to see exactly what kind of justification he gives for shooting those people like that.

You don't need "justification" when you own a meat rendering plant.

Murder is only a deal when there is evidence and consequences.

Clumsy people drown in those open space grinder vats all the time.

Imagine pouring mince meat into a coffin.
