Spoilers Supergirl - Season 2

I'm kidding of course, but one of the things I hope doesn't happen is this becoming Superman with Supergirl as a side character. It's one of the big reasons why whenever there was talk about Superman showing up, I didn't want to say anything because I don't want Superman to be there.

There's no reason why that should happen. Superman lives in Metropolis. This show is set in National City. It's not like Frasier sidelined its title character once Sam Malone from Cheers made a guest appearance. TV writers do have the capability to keep their shows focused on their own main characters.

Supergirl was NEVER under any restrictions regarding whether they could or could not show Superman. They handled the character the way they did purely because they wanted to keep the focus on Kara, but did not want her to exist in a world without her cousin.

Yep. As Andrew Kreisberg put it, "So it's not like we've been asking for more Superman or can we do it like this or can we have him in this. For us, we're perfectly happy with the amount of Superman that we've had because it's the exact amount that we've asked for." Their desire has always been to do a show about Supergirl. Now they've decided that they want to tell a story that involves Superman, but that's because that particular story calls for it. That doesn't overturn their overall goals and interests for the series as a whole.

Matt Bomer was a Superman candidate for the movies way back when.

Which is why I was struck by how much Henry Cavill in The Man from UNCLE reminded me of Bomer in White Collar.

Matt Bomer voiced Superman in the animated movie Superman: Unbound, and his Lois was Castle's Stana Katic. I could easily see both of them reprising those roles in Supergirl.

Ooh, Katic would make a terrific Lois Lane.

How about Victor Webster? He already appears in a lot of shows filmed in Vancouver anyway. :D

You know, he does kinda look like Ed Benes' Superman.

I've only seen him in Continuum, and I still have't watched the final season, but I didn't find him to be the greatest of actors.

Well he's not in such a challenging part, and think about the direction he must have been given?

"Okay season one continuum Victor, you're a dopey guy being lied to by a beautiful woman and what ever she says, you just roll with it, because, hey, look at that ass."

(1 year later)

"Victor baby! Now you're starting to notice that the weird shit is a little too oddball to be explained by how cute her bum is. Looking into her eyes is no longer the answer to all your questions. You're starting to be terrorized and sickened by the ease at which she lies to you. A lying woman still gives you a boner, you're only human, but you got some reservations too that they think you're a dummy, which ain't cool."

(One Year later)

"Inner circle Victor! You know what's happening, and it's awful because now you're a liar with a weeping ulcer the size of a football. Covering up for the hot time traveller is turning you into a bad cop and a dirty cop. You really don't like it, especially when you're trying to numb your doubts by looking at her sweet butt and she goes invisible. Invisible!? It's not fair! Asses are to be oogled! Not vanish! We made a deal with god thousands of years ago and this dippy future girl is breaking it!"

(One year later, final season)

"Victor we're going to give you grey highlights. Make you look like Hot Commissioner Gordon from comic books. Bring in all the emotionally broken girls with daddy complexes. You're the Boss at the police Station, which doesn't mean shit because you're still Batman's bitch. There's an early grave ready somewhere waiting for you, and you just want to jump in it and think about Kira's ass in season one as you fade out, but her shit keeps snowballing, I mean shitballing into a big shitball that thinks your life is a shitball bowling pin. That early grave is going to go unused because you're going to drown in a big ball of shit, and the anticipation of which is making you even greyer and therefore hotter to all the strippers watching."

Jennifer Lawrence, twice. Silver Linings Playbook (early 20s playing 30s) and Joy (mid-20s, playing mid-30s).
Wasn't her character supposed to be 27 in Silver Linings? I don't remember. Either way she didn't strike me as older.

Plus, Superman is Kryptonian, maybe he doesn't have to look his age. And don't forget, they might want someone who could play Superman for another 9 or 10 seasons.

This is a recent picture of Tom Welling.

Call me crazy, but that guy doesn't look like what Superman would look like on this show.
Maybe if they do Kingdom Come Superman. :p

If they're doing Kingdom Come Superman they should go with Eric Dane. He looks like the old school Superman with the squinty eyes.

I actually hope that whoever they cast is someone that we never predicted or saw coming. I want them to find someone new, someone who gets the role because he does really, really well in the auditions, not because he played it sometime in the past. The casting directors for Berlanti Productions have done a fantastic job finding the right actors before, so let’s trust them to do it again.

Christopher Reeve was a virtual unknown when he was cast as Superman. That turned out pretty well.

The only way I see a 'name' actor getting this role is if they get their hands on the casting sheets and reach out to the producers, or if they actually audition (and I don't see that happening with the likes of Welling [who looks too physically old for the role] or Bomer).

I would be perfectly happy with that.

The Superman you never saw coming is the actor who keeps getting cast in every TV show filmed up in Canada... Roger Cross!!! :D

Back when it was still in development, the show was specifically looking for 26-year-old actresses to play a 24-year-old character (Kara). If it were as easy to 'play older' as you guys are suggesting, there would've been no reason for them to put the "26 years old" minimum age cap in place when searching for their "Girl of Steel".
If an actor who was thirty walked in and blew their socks off, I doubt they'd pass.

Show me one example where someone in their late 20s was able to convincingly portray someone in their mid-30s (or even older).

Like I said, show me one example of someone in their late 20s convincingly portraying someone in their mid-30s.

In this scene, the mid-20 Hayley Atwell plays Peggy Carter in both her mid-30s and her mid-90s.

Lea Tompson. Back to the Future.

Then there is Angela Lansbury, who was often cast as characters who were 10 to 20 years older than her actual age.

^^
Recent X-Men movies are a good example as well.
There's been 5 years between First Class and Apocalypse, yet 21 years have passed in-universe.
So basically everyone there is playing older than themselves.

Hey, he'd actually be pretty good at it. I mean, sure, we already saw Illusory Pre-Teen Kal-El as a white kid, but hey, he's an alien! Who's to say Kryptonians can't change their skin color at puberty?

Gerard Christopher was 30 years old when he made his debut as Superboy, making him older than Christopher Reeve, Dean Cain, Brandon Routh and Henry Cavill when they made their respective debuts as Superman.

Superboy the TV show doesn't get good till season two when they recast the Superboy roll.

Weirdly the bad actor from season one, John Newton, is still into Superman enough that he did a couple cartoon shorts "recently". I must add that considering he has a lengthy IMDB listing, that sometime after 26 episodes of Superboy, John must have learnt how to act.

So despite being just about completely forgotten, John still considers himself Superman. :)

Yeah I really don't see this harming the show or detracting from Supergirl herself in any way. Obviously Superman is an iconic character with a commanding presence whenever he's on screen, but it's Benoist's charming performance that I enjoy watching most on this show, and her character and journey that I really want to follow. And I don't see that changing at all.

All this does is just get rid of the silly and distracting attempts to hide Superman from view.
