Why not? What does "mental maturity" have to do with it? Actors haven been playing younger and older than their actual ages since acting began.^ All the acting talent in the world isn't going to compensate for mental maturity that just isn't there.

It's called acting for a reason.

Matt Bomer voiced Superman in the animated movie Superman: Unbound, and his Lois was Castle's Stana Katic. I could easily see both of them reprising those roles in Supergirl.Matt Bomer was a Superman candidate for the movies way back when.
Superman Coming to Supergirl
Well, I think it was bound to happen sometime. I hope they write it in a way where they address the concerns and then maybe send him down a time portal to somewhere away from Supergirl so it can still be Supergirls show.
I'm kidding of course, but one of the things I hope doesn't happen is this becoming Superman with Supergirl as a side character. It's one of the big reasons why whenever there was talk about Superman showing up, I didn't want to say anything because I don't want Superman to be there.
Show me one example where someone in their late 20s was able to convincingly portray someone in their mid-30s (or even older).
This is a silly objection. There's tons of examples of actors playing older than themselves - 'mental maturity' is one of the least important aspects for what's actually on the screen.
Can they do American?
@Kai "the spy" Richard Madden is 29, not 30, and there's no way a 29-year-old could convincingly play somebody in their mid-30s (35/36). They don't have the maturity needed.

In this scene, the mid-20 Hayley Atwell plays Peggy Carter in both her mid-30s and her mid-90s.Like I said, show me one example of someone in their late 20s convincingly portraying someone in their mid-30s.
Jennifer Lawrence, twice. Silver Linings Playbook (early 20s playing 30s) and Joy (mid-20s, playing mid-30s).
Hmm.
I still can't see them putting out a casting call for actors younger than their mid-30s, though.
Sure, they may well not but it's still a silly to thing to say people can't 'play older.'
In fact there's a whole trope on it! http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HollywoodOld
