I thought I explained it clearly enough before: You, as someone who has not been authorized by CBS, Paramount, Pocket Books, or any of the other companies that publish Star Trek fiction in whatever formats (ie. games and comics), are NOT ALLOWED TO MAKE MONEY OFF SOMEONE ELSE'S COPYRIGHTED PROPERTY. Period.

If you want to boycott the pro authors, that's your own business. I boycott a couple of them, for reasons that are good enough for me. But boycotting them because a moderator on this forum got after you for something doesn't make sense. The pro authors aren't the people who own this site, and they certainly don't run it. And posting your fanfic isn't going to deprive them of money, either, because there are many people who read both kinds of Star Trek fiction. I've got a whole bookshelf full of old fanzines from the '60s-'90s. I've got another bookshelf full of pro Trek novels, anthologies, and reference books.

About your latest idea: Since Star Trek the TV show isn't part of the in-universe Star Trek history, bringing up the TV show with Riker and Troi is just going to elicit a "Huh? What are you talking about?" reaction.

Technically, we don't know that the Star Trek TV show isn't part of the Star Trek universe. Jim is a Star Trek fan as that's been established on Taxi. It's possible that the title may have been forgotten by the time of the too soon 22nd to 24th centuries, but that doesn't mean that Jim can't list a key character's name like Spock and talk about a few missions that were too coincidental with Starfleet's history for Riker to want to take the chance. I have an idea for some funny dialogue because I'm going to write the story based on the assumption that Worf has seen images of Kruge and will look at him strangely.

Now as for the Great Brain crossover, I will be trying to ask about permission to use their characters as well as Star Trek's characters for something that's no more than a printing in a magazine that I would like to see appear; and I'll probably ask a
Technically, we don't know for sure that it isn't. If Jim were to make references to Spock and describe things he saw them doing on the show that coincided were the same adventures in Starfleet's history, then Riker and Troi might want to get him to the Enterprise ASAP to find out how he knows about this. Jim did indicate in one episode that he was a Star Trek fan. I've got an idea on how to make it funny after he gets on board the Enterprise because I'm going to write the story based on the assumption that Worf has seen Kruge and will look at him strangely. I will attempt some funny dialogue.

Finally, I'm not trying to make money off the story. I have already written it off line and am copying it verbatim. If nobody wants to pay me, then I can live with that.

Technically, we don't know that Star Trek the TV show isn't part of the Star Trek universe. I hate the way my post will disappear before I can get it typed if I try to scroll up and look for something. Anyway, it's been established on Taxi that Jim is a Star Trek fan. It's possible that the title of the series may have been forgotten by the 22nd through the 24th centuries, but we don't know that it never existed. That's never been established. The only thing we can establish for sure so far about Star Trek is that the Kahn Noonian Singh was never real because he didn't exist in the 1990's and they set Star Trek too close to the present. Now if Riker wants to know what Jim's talking about, which he probably would, all Jim would have to do is talk about a key character's name like Spock and talk about some of the missions that are too close to be a coincidence with Starfleet's history, then he'll probably feel compelled to take on board along with the taxi ASAP. I'm planning some funny dialogue because I'm going to write the story based on the assumption that Worf has seen at least one image of Kruge and will think he looks familiar.

I would like to ask an agent about what I'd have to get permission to use the Great Brain characters as well. I hope the cost isn't too high for a character they nobody's done anything with since several years after the author died. The only reason the eighth book came out was because someone found notes. I'd think people would like them because there hasn't been anything new, but I hope I wouldn't have to shell out a bunch of money for nothing. I'd like to ask if it's possible to get permission to do some sort of way I could share the money if the story does sell. I know I was told to google, but can someone please do that for me and give me one?

Finally, you've got me convinced that I can't make money with this fun to write story. I've resigned myself with having to live with that. I've already written it out offline; and if nobody thinks it would be interesting to wipe out the Federation by breaking the temporal time directive in a major way, then I can live with that. Technically, there was a Starfleet officer who made a minor violation of the temporal prime directive that pales in comparison to this one; and that was Janeway in the series finale episode Endgame. Now I'll continue with the story.

"Would you be able to show Jonah being spit up by a great fish and still living?"

The image changed to show that too.

"This would be interesting to show atheists," I commented. I made sure there was plenty of distance between myself and the others before I said, "Imagine the wars that could've been avoided if someone traveled back in time to Earth's history and succeeded in talking the first sentient Earth female out of eating from that fruit."

A minute or so later, everyone watching the Guardian except myself, Data, and the two changelings passed out, and I said, "Please skip ahead of the biblical events to a random year and/or even on another planet or even in a star or space."

After the Guardian complied with my request, an arm seemed to appear out of nowhere, took Data's com badge, and threw it through the Guardian.

Since it's your fanfic, of course you can do it however you want.

My point is that Star Trek the TV show was never part of in-universe Star Trek. Don't believe me? Then explain why Kirk and his crew weren't mobbed for autographs when they went back in time to San Francisco to get the whales in Star Trek IV. Or how about the Voyager episode in which Janeway, Chakotay, Tuvok, and Paris were back in time in the 1990s? Voyager had been around long enough that they should have been mobbed for autographs.

For that matter, Kirk and Spock should have been accosted just walking down the street in Assignment: Earth.

They may have gotten lucky. As for the 90's, in the Star Trek universe, there was a eugenics war that had Kahn in it because they had it too close to the present. If they would've set Star Trek in the 33rd century and said that the Eugenics wars happened in the 2990's, it would've left room for plenty of room for time to develop a super human.

I really could use money for my stories because I haven't been able to get a job. I found the ones I printed, and I'm wanting to run two copies off of them, one to go to an agent and one to go off to that Strange New Worlds contest if someone can give me the address. I caught one of my favorite creatures, which is a snake; and I'm hoping it'll still be home when I get home. I don't have a job, and I could really use the money to buy food to feed it if it hasn't escaped. I'm thinking it was a racer. It's black and very fast. I had a hard time getting it in a ten gallon aquarium. I got bit a couple times and didn't even know it because I'm diabetic and don't always know I get cuts because I don't have healthy blood. The problem with me having the snake is that I'll probably want to spend so much time with it that I won't have time for much of anything else because I'll be wanting to spend a lot of my time with it.

I realize you're an atheist and will have respect your beliefs even though I don't see how there couldn't be a God.

We are the Borg. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile.
God bless, Jason Irelan

one to go off to that Strange New Worlds contest if someone can give me the address.
Google is your friend, don't be afraid to use it. A quick search for "Strange New Worlds Contest" quickly reveals that the time for entries has ended.

You might also want to have a few more copies to send out to agents, it might take a little time to find one that suits you.

Would if the first agent I find through googling isn't a Star Trek fan? Please help me out. I'll be very grateful to you if you do, and so will Jewel. That's the name of the snake I caught. As for Strange New Worlds, there should be a date for their second volume if they're ready to accept entries for that, and you can let me know when they are. My dream job would be working with Malaysian kraits, which are venomous snakes. According to the Bible, one of the signs of a believer is that they'll pick them up; and if I can get around OSHA by signing a liability waiver, if God doesn't want to protect me, a bite from one of those won't result in a death that's too unpleasant; and I will take precautions by getting a snake kit and anti-venin.

Now for the continuation for the story that's no more than fun.

"I am on a leave of absence from Starfleet right now," I told Data, "And I fully intend to go back and try to talk the first Earth female out of eating from that fruit after being lied to about it; and if this was a chess match between us, you'd be checkmated because I have two Founder shapeshifters who are well rested and more than fresh enough to deal with you if you try to physically stop me. They took care of the ones guarding it who weren't androids by changing into poisonous gas that could knock them unconscious for a long time. They already know about your off switch and they could restrain you while work at trying to find it and make it impossible for you to accompany me. I know you're a life form, but you're an artificial being that may not be invented unless you want to go back and try ask God about making sure people are smart enough to invent androids in the future. I figure if the Lord didn't want anyone to be able to travel back in time to try to change history, he wouldn't have let this Guardian be here."

You know what? I don't know about anyone else, but I'm done with you.

We tried to be nice and gave you solid advice, and you still want us to do all the work for you, just like when you said you paid someone else to write your term papers. It's time for you to step up and take on some responsibility for yourself.

But one last answer: what if the first agent you find doesn't work out for you? FIND ANOTHER ONE!!! DO ANOTHER GOOGLE SEARCH!! Is it THAT hard to figure out??? And yes, I was shouting.

A literary agents fandom probably won't play a part in choosing who to represent. Being a fan is a hobby, being an agent is a job--one that will be getting harder with the easy opportunities people now have to self-publish (before you ask/think/say anything more, you CANNOT self-publish Star Trek fanfic, at least not without having legal problems afterwards). Agents may have full lists of writers and not be able to take any more, so be ready to receive rejection letters.

If you want this, you have to be willing to put in the leg work. If you're not going to spend the time and do that by yourself then you're just being lazy, especially as you've said you're unemployed at the moment--so you should have more time than those of us who work to investigate the literacy world.

They're working on compiling the latest volume, another one would depend on sales figures, I'd suspect. Try going onto their site, bookmarking it, checking back regularly for updates, or email them directly to see if/when there will be another contest.

Being a writer is a job, one you need to take seriously and work at. You're coming off as pretty half-arsed here, wanting people to do research, etc for you, all things that anyone with a computer and access to the internet can do with ease. If you can't manage to do those essential things yourself, I'm sorry to say that you might not have what it takes to be a writer. I do it for fun and enjoyment, but still look into all I need for it myself, sometimes I'll bounce ideas of one or two folks, but I'm not asking them to do anything more than give feedback/critique.

Maybe it's a timeloop scenario, where Doc Brown shows up in the future and meets Barclay and takes him back in time to the 60s to meet Star Trek because he's a fan of Star Trek. Except they wind up in the 80s and meet TJ Hooker and Mad Murdoch and their good friend the Guardian of Forever who is working part-time at Sunshine Cab Company because it couldn't get work after it became typecast from city on the edge of forever and now works the convention circuit but not as much he'd like. And then the guardian travels back to the garden of eden with barclay and find there is no adam yet. Barclay realises to preserve the timeline he has to become adam and finds eve and the guardian becomes the guardian of eden and falls in love with stonehenge and the two go off to build the pyramids.

this

The world is absolutely chock full of people who want to be writers, many because they have some passion, something to offer, many more simply because they perceive it to be a way of making decent money without leaving the house or doing anything other than typing a bit. For most, especially the second group, it is a fantasy, nothing more.

I'm no writer, I indulge myself in dabbling for fun, fan fictions and otherwise, but I have a full time job, kids to raise and a house to keep. I simply don't have the time or effort spare to engage in anything more. I'm aware of this and also the fact that in truth I'm not good enough. Only those willing to put in far MORE effort than they would have to in a full time job stand a chance of succeeding and even then the number who have anything worth publishing is pretty small change. Add in the fact they are by definition competing against each other and you see the point that writing really isn't a cop out option. It requires you to be more hardworking, more industrious and taking that bit more initiative than the next guy.

One question: How did the Guardian change from a doughnut-shaped rock to an organic lifeform?

Actually, you could even throw 2001: A Space Odyssey into this. Way back in the '80s, when I was at a convention, some guy in the dealers' room was selling some "Monolith" cartoons. Seems that the Monolith flew over Stonehenge one day, and the Stonehenge rocks were overjoyed to see it... "Sonny!" "Mom! Pop!"

It was a very touching family reunion.

So sorry. I said I was going to wash my hands of this and walk away. But I came by to re-read the thread and evaluate whether or not I was too harsh in my farewell post. I always try very hard to remember that these aren't just words on a screen, but rather there is a real live human being on the other end of the line. I re-read his postings to see if there was anything I say "better" in an edit to my post. In the end, I decided I was on-target. You can be nice only for so long. And I'm done.

Constructive criticism sometimes needs to be tough. Anyone who posts stories, artwork, films, etc has to have a tough enough skin to know that not everyone will like it and will gladly say what they think without a filter. To open up your work, the thing you've slaved over for days/weeks/months, is to open yourself to everything people have to say.

I'd hope that when I post fanfic, people are honest with what they say, not looking for sycophants.

Sorry for roping you back in Sgt_G with the quote, maybe you can resist seeing in what context you were quoted, I know I can't :bolian:

I've been debating with myself about whether or not to close this thread because it became a general chat thread in between and I half suspect @5billionof5billion is having us on.

I feel like all in all, this thread has meandered way off topic so I'm closing it.

@5billionof5billion - if you still want to post your story here I suggest you do so in a new thread. It seems your protagonist has changed anyway. Please don't use that other thread as a general chat thread to ask unrelated questions. I also recommend posting longer segments of your story per post, preferably after writing it out and proofreading it beforehand.
