Space X Latest Launch

It looks like the latest booster sustained heavy damage and won't be reused for flight. There are cracks in the housing and also some burn through at the center engine.
If they can still reuse (most of) the engines, then it's a win either way. The Merlin is actually the single most expensive part of the rocket; not having to replace all 9 of them every launch would still be a huge cost saver.

Thanks, looks like a glitch right before landing where the video cut out. Hopefully we'll see a clearer shot in the next few day.

That's the impact of the stage jostling the barge, the satellite dish goes out of alignment for a moment.

Here's an incredible video of the view from the first stage, from space to the actual landing.

CRS-9 mission launches tonight around 12:40am EST (just after midnight). They'll be landing the first stage on shore at the cape instead of using the barge. Should be some great footage. NASA TV will be airing this launch since it is going to ISS and it will also be webcast by SpaceX. You can find the webcast here.

SpaceX has had its haters in the past, especially the HLV/Let's do Apollo Again crowd. But there's one thing you can say about SpaceX that gets the crickets chirping every time:

They have become so successful at this that the FAILURE TO RECOVER PART OF THE ROCKET actually makes headlines.

This is becoming the new normal; this is the space age we've been waiting for. This is becoming a world where people like ULA and NASA and Roscosmos spend hundreds of millions of dollars on a single launch and the entire rocket disintegrates just getting the payload into orbit and people look at it and think "Well THAT's not very efficient..."

Looks like this rocket was used for the latest test which shows the engines firing for 2.5 minutes.

Why? To pull the Earth into an outward, less sunny orbit, all they had to do is burn the rocket downward during the night. Pulling yourself up by the bootstraps – I am hearing it works. :p
