Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

I believe that it is some kind of field gear that is already in the escape pods.

Could be, but if it's already in the escape pod, how does the escape pod know to have the right uniform for the right person? (No good for a Lt. Arex or Keenser type, for example.) It looks like Scotty escaped in a torpedo tube, but so many others were in escape pods, and you'd think a few would at least have had time to change into whatever kind of "away team" or "survival" gear that is.
The entire Franklin is a mystery, really. Why's it there? What happened to its crew? What's it's story? Did it land or crash? Was it being kept a secret by some locals? Have they been maintaining it, or is it a relic? Why? How is it still space-worthy? Actually, it's a touchy subject that will need some good answers, because it's damn convenient to have it there if it's their method of escape.

23rd century clothing adapts to its user! :p

The warp effect is neat, but I still like the ST09 one better. Instead of the fluid motion conveyed in the STB trailer, it made warp seem chaotic and a bit dangerous. There was also an absence of color, and that made some sense to me, at least.

The only real problems I have with how warp effect is shown here is why the field is so large around the ship, particularly staying so wide open behind it, and why there is a "wake" streaming from the shuttlebay area. Get rid of that and enclose the warp field behind the ship to make it look more like the ship is in a bubble or a bead warping through space, and I would be totally behind it. Then again, no one in production asked for my opinion up front. So, I get what I get and I won't throw a fit . :)

I'm just guessing but I kinda feel like they are sent to that region to look for the Franklin which they have lost contact with..........Looking forward to July though.

My favorite warp effect is from "Into Darkness"; I loved how the space warp propulsion expands and delivers a contrail of ice particles. As for this new warp effect? Nothing special; seems inspired by Christopher Nolan, but I have to see it in it's perspective.

That's what I've been thinking too. We still don't know exactly what leads then out to region where they run into Krall and the swarm, so I've been wondering if maybe they're looking for the Franklin.

More than a few TOS episodes started that way. I wonder if the Franklin's crew did something to create Krall's antagonism towards the Federation, or if he's always been that way and the Franklin's crew were is first victims (even though the ship survived). Having to repair the damage created by a prior ship and crew is a fine old Trek trope, too.

To be honest, it really just looks like a model in a wind tunnel. A nice effect, but not entirely original in design or execution. It could be the perfect side view is a problem for me, too. What's the effect look like from an angle?

I think the reason the first trailer was average was that tmany of the visuals just weren't finished in time. Here's a comparison of shots from first and second trailer: (second on the bottom).

For me, I was shocked to see the Enterprise shredded, and the crew appeared stranded on a planet. And the whole thing was bombarded by an inappropriate soundtrack. See, I was raised to view the ship as a character, so it took me aback to accept this new film will focus on the characters; who haven't all been that interesting... well with the exception of Spock, and Uhura, but I loved the look of the zebra looking, potential - infallible, Wonder Woman character.
This new trailer was an improvement for me, I would've loved to see more Uhura scenes but its good.

Yeah, a lot of these effects appear to be inspired by what astro-scientist's, who continue to be wrong, believe space travel could look like, but it lacks a lot of right brain style. I remember watching a doc from one of those boring men depicting a large bubble ring - expanding through long distances where a satellite would travel into. After the doc, I thought it was a waste of an hour of my life, and I can see why many don't seem to care about space travel anymore. It's too scientifee, it needs some imagination.

Apply general relativity. . To the observer it "looks" that way. It might not actually be that shape. :nyah:

I didn't like the particles that much...felt like fairy dust or something. The new one is much better although I can't tell what a POV version would look like.

Big spoilers! Although most of us have already guessed it, someone snapped this at the fan event:

When were astro-scientist actually wrong about how space travel looks like? Last time I checked 2001 - A space Odyssee, which came out before the moonlandig and was advised by scientist - got space travel pretty right.
