Spoilers Arrow - Season 4

It's a setup to Lance losing his job. He's gonna become a private detective and start to study magic, maybe move to Chicago.
I get that reference, but interestingly enough in the comics, Larry Lance (BC I's husband and BC II's father) did quit the force to become a PI.

One thing I immediately noticed and miss terribly; I really loved seeing Arrow and Spartan and Black Canary and Red Arrow working together as a team this season. It felt so empty seeing just Arrow and Spartan with no ladies. I hope they introduce a new female hero next season to join the team.

I was really hoping that their new Black Canary would be showing up more. Everything's set up for it - she's skilled and driven, her parents are dead, and she's backed down from killing in order to live up to Laurel's legacy.

That's the beauty of it. The character on the show has had so many dealings with magic what with Sara getting resurrected and trying to find a way to resurrect Laurel that you could easily see him continue to study it and become a practitioner.

Well, maybe he and the ex-wife know a guy named Johnny Thunder. ;)

Watching tonight's episode, something occurred to me; Quentin Lance is dead meat. He's not the dad of a main character anymore, he's not a cop anymore, and he's too old to be a superhero. He no longer serves any function on the show.

^ I think he still works as a character with a lot of story to be told and as mentioned, he can become a PI if he doesn't continue as a cop.

Could become the stepfather of a main character

I assume Ray will take care of any issues with the board of directors when he returns, though one wonders how the company

got renamed after Felicity in the timeline without Ray returning. She doesn't seem that focussed on the business.

That was the timeline that exists if Ray never returns.

The future should change when they return... assuming that these changes don't undo their mission. :P
